Dear Fellow Citizen,
On behalf of my family, it is with great pleasure and
honor that I announce the creation of Jeremy's Heroes. The goal
of this foundation is to award assistance to school-age children
who wish to pursue a sport, but are hindered by financial
barriers. These athletes will then demonstrate a commitment to
their community through their sport.
Jeremy's Heroes will be an enduring foundation that
represents who Jeremy was and how he lived his life. My parents
instilled in us the values of what my mother likes to call the
three "C's": compassion, courage and character. Jeremy strove to
achieve those "C's" in every aspect of his life, whether it was as
simple as a race to see who could eat their breakfast cereal the
quickest or a quest to become a National Judo champion. He faced
difficulties head on but always considered how his actions
affected others and, the best strategy to achieve his goal.
For the Glick children, athletics were always a
natural part of our life. When Jeremy was in grammar school, he
and my brothers were fierce judo competitors. Family vacations
were spent sight-seeing in the different states where the
competitions took place. I remember with great fondness, a trip we
took to Niagara Falls. My parents, and brothers piled into our
blue maxi-van (before maxi-vans were the popular way to travel)
and drove to the Falls for a junior national judo competition. I
do not recall which brothers won or came in what place that year
(although I am sure trophies came home with us as they always
did), but what I remember most vividly is the joy we took in being
together as a family. My parents encouraged us to participate and
excel in whatever we did. Sports were not just competitive events
but natural extensions of who we are both on and off the "field".
Jeremy was the third of six children. Growing up in
such a large household was both chaotic and wonderful. When his
nephews were born, he joyfully tossed them in the air, swam with
them in his pool, took them tubing in his boat and taught them how
to snow board. When his daughter Emerson came into this world this
past June, it was the happiest moment of his life. He was proud of
every wink of her eye, even every dirty diaper. Jeremy admired her
strong legs and wondered out loud what sport she would pursue.
Sports were an integral part of Jeremy's life and without question
would be a part of Emerson's life as well. Through Jeremy's Heroes
we will continue to value Jeremy's love for children and sports.
Jeremy gave the ultimate sacrifice to save countless
others. We pay tribute to his memory by teaching children the
value of compassion. By asking children to give back to their
community in whatever way their sport allows, we are celebrating
Jeremy's gift to America. Thank you.
Very truly yours,
Jennifer Glick,
President, Jeremy's Heroes
