Dam Safety Engineering Division

Buckeye Engineering specializes in dam safety engineering, stream restoration planning and geotechnical engineering. We assist Dam Owners in bringing their existing lakes into compliance with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Water regulations. We provide dam safety design services to municipalities, corporations and private homeowners. We are also hired by other engineering firms for our expertise. Our work includes designing water reservoir development projects, performing ground-water seepage studies and evaluating dam slope stability analysis. Types of dams evaluated include concrete gravity, roller compacted concrete and embankment structures. This work may consist of spillway repairs and upgrades that meet current regulatory standards along with preparation of Operation, Maintenance and Inspection Manuals, including Emergency Action Plans.

We perform specialized dam failure flood inundation studies required by the regulatory agency on dams with a high hazard classification. This study is part of the Emergency Action Plan. We have an excellent track record of efficiently obtaining the necessary permit approval for both dam upgrades and dam failure inundation studies from the regulatory agency.

Compliance and Engineering: Develop hydrology/hydraulic flood routing of the spillway system to meet the required storm event, based on the dam’s classification Determine if the existing spillway system will need upgraded, repaired or replaced Evaluate the geotechnical stability of dam Determine if the dam is a candidate for a reduced reclassification based on size and downstream potential hazards Prepare engineering drawings of dam embankment and spillway system Design trash rack and lake drains Design toe drain systems to reduce ground water seepage within dam
