2) To make disc 2 fit onto a 74-minute CD:

- 01:19:37 of quiet crowd noise was cut from the beginning and end of d2t01

- 00:31:05 of quiet crowd noise was cut from the end of

d2t03

- 00:01:00 of quiet crowd noise was cut from the end of d2t07 and faded

My review to the blackcat mailing list:

A more detailed review of 7/12 after some sleep and a listen to the tapes (which sound phenominal, btw, thanks to RevKev's gear, which made their return to a BT gig after a three year hiatus).  I pull into town around 4:00, take a wrong turn, and end up in a part of St. Louis I wish to never return.

"Hey baby!," she said as she wiggled her hips and waved from the distance. No free parking to be found, I finally pull into the $5 parking lot behind the venue and next to the Mississippi River. It's at this point I curse myself for not putting sunscreen on the arm that was hanging out the window during the three hour drive down from Bloomington. Sucker still burns two days Later. Run into Ross immediately, who I think was on his third bottle of LiveWire Mountain Dew (and, as I later found out, he had also downed a bottle of Red Bull at this point). Also ran into Aaron, Jon G, a lurker who will hopefully identify himself, as it was way too loud when we were originally introduced, Dan C, and others. We had a nice netter reunion going. Not quite

Red Rocks, but fun none-the-less.  I like This Ache, and it works for an opening song, as it probably has the best groove out of the songs on the new album. Other BT songs that fall into good openers include But Anyway and Love & Greed. I wouldn't put it up there with those two, but a good choice.  Felicia is Felicia...always liked the groove towards the end of the song. Can't See Why is sorta "ehh" for me. It just doesn't seem to go anywhere. The All Hands sandwich was the shit, though. They did a great Mulling It Over segue in St. Louis last year and did it justice again this summer. The transition from Mullin' to Thinnest of Air was pretty cool, as was the transition from ToA into Steven. I'm really starting to dig things once I hear the bass line into Emperor, which, in my opinion, was a bit better than the 7/4 version. I have to say that the first big moment for this St. Louis crowd was the huge harp solo in Emperor. Just a phenominal response from everyone. Huge smile on my face at this point...and then we slide into a good groove with the Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I can't really ask for more than a Regarding Steven > Emperor > GBU segue. They finish the set sliding back into All Hands with Tad's solo, which always seems to bring out the best in those who've had a few too many (and we're not even to set break). He does some funky stuff and we close the set with the huge All Hands finale.

While I will always long for the five minute Chan guitar solo into Gotta Get Mean from years long ago, I'm always happy to hear this, especially as a set opener. Rich Mahan added a nice touch with his guitar work. I'm not a huge fan of the Joker cover, it did it's job and got people moving. We then go into a streak of older tunes, minus Blessed Pain and Sweet & Broken. Outside of Sweet & Broken, the rest of the show was just LOUD. Slow Change, Crash Burn, Bagheera, Love & Greed, Business as Usual...I was expected Business to close the set, but with at least 25 minutes to curfew, we get The Path which was segued with a really nice piano solo from Ben into Hook. Band comes back on with nine minutes to curfew and continues the loudness of the second set with a nice Freedom. Really like the repition of the opening chords to close the song. I think someone mentioned they had started doing this a few shows ago.

Per BT show tradition, I take a wrong turn on my way out of town and have to backtrack for about 10 minutes. The trip home gets slowed down even more when the exit to 55 North is down for repair. Talk radio keeps me alive on the way home (Should YOU breast feed in public? Can you communicate with your cats on a conscious level?). 55 North from St. Louis to Bloomington is *not* the most exciting drive in the world.

Notes:

- There's a second dropout in Disc 1, Track 5 that is also on the master

- Ravinia is not the friendliest of venues. Mics were at head level throughout the show, so some chatter was picked up

- Thanks to RevKev for the gear and Avanti's Italian Restaraunt in Normal, IL for the free ranch dressing

My review to the blackcat mailing list:

The Ravinia is an interesting venue. That's the nicest way to put it. I know where the interest of this venue lies, and I can deal with it, as it's of no surprise. Walking around the lawn area, I get the feeling that I'm at a party to which I would never be invited. Wine booths. A "Better Homes & Garden" sponsored dinner. People eating brie cheese and crackers before a BT show. I mean, I love brie cheese, but you just typically don't see that at a pre-show party. It is just *weird*.

Run into Craig, Brad, and Andy pre-show. Craig fills me in on the list chaos that I missed while bumming around greater Highland Park, IL. Found the saddest mall a few miles out. Now playing at the GKC Theaters on screen four: "Closed". Sounds like a winner. Craig and I discuss which was more vomit

educing: Downing the bottle of syrup or the pictures of Brian in a Hooter's shirt. I voted for the syrup, as the thought tends to invoke my gag reflex almost immediately.

Mere seconds into the show, I had an altercation with a woman sitting behind me (involving my tendency to, you know, dance when I hear music) that consisted of her poking her finger painfully into my ribs and getting a security guard in less than three seconds. Again, I learned to deal with it. As for the first set, we start out with three new songs (Unable, Back in the Day, Can't See Why) before jumping into the way-back machine as we get a series of great old songs. "Can't See Why" segued into Proph, which always seems like bring the energy up. Emperor is next, which is the first of many songs I heard in St. Louis, but they can play Emperor every night for all I care. And I'd like to note that I think Marc was right about the band changing a few of the chords, as at this show, John was singing in the exact same key as he had for the previous two Emperors, but the rest of the band was playing in a different key, and it sounded much, much better. We hit the high point of the song and I can just feel everyone wanting to get up and groove, but...no.  We can't move. Cue Chan's guitar intro for Carolina Blues.

John walks off-stage for something and I guess forgets there's a show going on, as he sprints out right before his part and does a running jump for his harmonica, missing two or three notes of the beginning. Funny stuff. Things really start clicking when the segue into Business as Usual. Per Craig's request, we get the second of three "oldies but goodies" in Conquer Me. We get a trifecta of old tunes with a set closer Trina Magna > Thinnest of Air > Trina Magna. The segue back into Trina Magna sounded much better than at Red Rocks. Still not my favorite segue, but better.  John walks out and instructs everyone to "come on down" and dance and do whatever they like. The energy in the band definitely picks up after some life is brought back into this show. Second set opens with John on guitar (first time I can remember in recent weeks), which moved a heavy "Ache." Four recently commonly played tunes at strung together with Defense > Felicia > Slow Change > Sweet & Broken (Slow Change always gets a response) before moving into, as someone described, an "inspired" Go Outside & Drive. We get a couple of new songs (Stumble and Eventually) before closing the set with Love & Greed into Hook. Band comes back out and  closes with Let Her & Let Go and, due to time constraints, scratch off Motherfunker. I'm later told to inform everyone that they "had" to play Let Her instead of Motherfunker because XRT (local radio station) wanted the new tunes for later playback. I'm cool with that...I mean, "Let Her & Let Go" is obviously the better of the two songs. Heh. No, really, it's understandable.

We then say goodnight, and hopefully forever goodbye, to the Ravinia.

Overall a good show. Enjoyed St. Louis better, but the first set was great, and the GOAD in the second set was fun. Thanks to everyone who made everything possible.

- Owen
