How To Become A North Carolina Confederate Infantry Re-enactor 

What The North Carolinians Wore

            

From 1861 - October 1862 - North Carolina state frocks with matching trousers and militia bummers.

From 1862 - 1863 - Jeans cloth North Carolina depot jackets, jeans cloth trousers and militia bummers. For a brief period (September 1862 to around November 1862) the North Carolinians would have been in sky blue Yankee trousers after capturing the supply train at Harpers Ferry.

From Summer 1862 - 1865 - Jeans cloth North Carolina depot jackets, jeans cloth trousers and black North Carolina issue slouch hat.

 

The different types of cloth:

 

Suspenders - can be purchased from any sutler - approximate cost - $15

 

Homespun Shirt - can be purchased from any sutler - approximate cost - $25

 

 

Basic Equipment

Rifle - We encourage every new confederate infantry re-enactor to purchase a 1853 Enfield 3 Band Rifle by EuroArms - approximate cost - $400

 

You may choose to purchase the 1861 Springfield 3 Band Rifle by EuroArms, which is also acceptable - approximate cost - $450

 

Waist Belt & Buckle - can be purchased from any sutler - approximate cost for waist belt - $25, NC buckle - $9

 

Cartridge Box - can be purchased from any sutler - approximate cost - $40

 

Shoulder Strap For Cartridge Box - can be purchased from any sutler - approximate cost - $15

 

Cap Pouch - can be purchased from any sutler - approximate cost - $25

 

Bayonet, Scabbard & Frogg - can be purchased from any sutler - approximate cost - bayonet - $25, scabbard - $15, Frogg - $16, if you decide to purchase the Springfield then make sure that you get a Springfield bayonet but stay with the Enfield scabbard

 

Cap Pouch - can be purchased from any sutler - approximate cost - $25

 

Shoes - called brogans - black or brown are fine and can be purchased from any sutler . Make sure you get heel plates for them - approximate cost - $100

 

Slouch Hat - can be purchased from any sutler - approximate cost - $25

 

Canteen - can be wooden or "bullseye"   - .can be purchased from any sutler - approximate cost - $40

 

Haversack - canvas - can be purchased from any sutler - approximate cost - $15

 

Tin Cup - can be purchased from any sutler - approximate cost - $10

 

Please consult Captain Swanger or 1st Sgt. Shultz when you plan to buy any items.

 

 

Making Rounds

Rounds should be made of white paper cartridges. They can be purchased for $5 per 125 from a sutler or can be made. If you decide to make your own, then consult the Captain or 1st Sgt on how to do so. Goex FFF black powder can be purchased from the unit for around $10 per pound.
