12.8@109 and the Racemaster goes POP

  • First of all, I am car 0959. You will notice other time slips in my other webpages with the same number. I am 0959 in all of them. I had to put that in there since I have been getting e-mails asking if I beat the Honda I raced on this timeslip. Read on, I had an exciting day here. The starter at the track did a good job of putting like vehicles together to run down the track to help crowd enthusiam. I noticed trucks were put against trucks, Camaros against Mustangs, and rice vs. rice. That put me against a riced out Honda. It was night, and he was flashing his strobe headlights in the staging lanes. It looked pretty cool, but, not too functional at a dragstrip. That was ok. I was there to give my car one last farewell beating. I did plan on more than two runs, and did not plan on blowing a tire.

  • Datalogged run. The 3-4 was a power/shift, the others were granny shifts.

  • The slicksI had a bit over 1/10" of meat left to wear down. The sides are worn a little more than the centers.

  • Rear view of good vs. bad
  • M & H Racemaster, 24.5/8.5 x 15 @ 11.5 psi and 0 psi.
  • I normally run 12 - 12.5 psi, and was trying to better my 60' time.

  • front view of good vs. bad

  • Torn sidewall.

  • I stuffed two fingers in the hole so you can get a idea of the size of the tear.

  • Bad tire top view. I'm actually impressed the tire didn't shread at the speed I was going and how far it took me to bring the car to a crawl.

  • Bad tire front view.

This was a white knuckle ride

  • Moral of the story. I don't have one. My slicks looked like they were in good condition, and had a lot of rubber left to wear down. Maybe the low profile is too low, or I hit a bump in the track as I lifted off of the accelerator? To the credit of the Racemasters, they didn't shred and beat up the rest of the car, or get tangled in the steering and other components. The rims stayed protected somehow, and both beads were still in tack, and on the rim.

What a farewell run for me and the car. I had a blast building this car, and learning about turbos, but, it is time to move on. Check back later, and see my next toy!
It needs to be faster than 12.8 @ 109 in the 1320.
