Beta versions of ANY game are basically just a version of the game played only by staff and developers so they can go through the game and edit it, taking out certain areas, items, etc. (Or adding areas, items, etc.) The beta version of Resident Evil looks to be about the same as that of the final version of the game, but there were some screenshots, items, areas, etc. that were changed before it was released.
