Willie Stargell, affectionately dubbed "Pops" by his Pittsburgh Pirates teammates, was a leader both on and off the field.   In 1979 he led his team to the pinnacle of the baseball world to win the World Series Championship.  While his prowess at the plate was widely acknowledged and renowned, few outside the team knew of his "Stargell Star," an award given to players as they excelled in contributing to victory after victory that season.
Upon winning their championship, the team revealed the added role that Pops played in the clubhouse, including the adoption of the popular song "We Are Family" early in the season to propel the players to greater performance.   His statue now stands outside PNC Park, beyond the left field wall where he dominated for most of his baseball career.
You might notice in my photograph the Stargell Stars at his feet.   The accompanying smaller photograph is of a star bearing Willie's autograph and the date of the statue's dedication, April of 2001.   A closer inspection of this photograph will reveal the reflection of Willie's upper body and his bat.   Within weeks of the unveiling of his statue, Willie Stargell succumbed to his mortality and left his legacy to baseball.   The flowers at his feet are tributes from his fans who honored and respected the man and the baseball player.

"Champions"
1247

This 12 story mural, painted in 1992 and never officially titled, fell to the wrecker's ball on May 30, 1998, a victim of urban redevelopment.   Its creator, Judy Penzer, had perished in an airplane crash 2 years earlier.   This photograph of that building honors Pittsburgh sports legends (top to bottom) Mario Lemieux, Roberto Clemente, "Mean Joe" Greene, Jack Lambert and Bill Mazeroski.
I took this photograph 2 weeks before the building's demise.   By the time I returned for some "insurance" shots a few days later, the wall had been pockmarked with holes for the implosive charges to be planted.   I left that picture for others to puzzle; I had mine.

Home to 2 Pittsburgh Pirate World Championship teams and 1 All Star Game, 7 Pittsburgh Steeler Super Bowl teams (6 victories), and numerous playoff games, this stadium brought 29 years of sport thrills to Southwestern Pennsylvania.   On February 7, 2001 it was demolished in favor of 2 new stadiums, baseball's PNC Park and football's Heinz Field.   As we forge new memories we cannot dismiss the old.   Thank you, Three Rivers Stadium, for yours.
