"A Hard Day's Night" is probably the best early Beatles album. It's the soundtrack album to the movie of the same name. The movie was a huge success and was followed up by the album. The soundtrack album was an even bigger success than the movie, topping the charts for several weeks only to be knocked off by "Beatles For Sale". With 12 new Lennon-McCartney originals, the album was a very strong contribution and was better than "Please Please Me" and "With The Beatles" combined. "A Hard Day's Night" is a great start to the album, it's about someone who works all day and justs wants to get home and rest which is something that most people can relate to. "I Should Have Know Better" is a good follow-up song to "A Hard Day's Night" the harmonica adds a nice touch and the tune is catchy. "If I Fell" is a very strong emotional song by John. It's a big-time standout on the album and is one of my favorites. "I'm Happy Just To Dance With You" is a catchy song with a good beat and a good guitar sound. "And I Love Her" is Paul's follow-up to John's "If I Fell" it's not quite as strong but it's still a pretty good song. "Tell Me Why" is pretty good, it swings more than it rocks which is kind of neat. The harmonies in this song are good. "Can't Buy Me Love" is a great song that sends out the message that money can buy alot of nice thing but not love. The guitar solo in this song is cool. "Any Time At All" is nothing special. "I'll Cry Instead" is a really good song, the tune is catchy and the country western guitar in the background sounds cool. "Things We Said Today" is an excellent song by Paul. The lyrics and his singing are great. This song is one of the best on the album. "When I Get Home" is good. "You Can't Do That" is a good rocker by John that's about a guy who's girl is cheating on him and he thinks it's because she's jealous. "I'll Be Back" is a nice song. It's a simple, but good way to end the album.

    "A Hard Day's Night"

    It's been a hard day's night,
And I been working like a dog
    It's been a hard day's night,
I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you
I find the things that you do
    Will make me feel alright
You know I work all day
To get you money to buy you things
And it's worth it just to hear you say
You're going to give me everything
So why on earth should I moan,
'Cause when I get you alone
    You know I feel ok
When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight yeah
    It's been a hard day's night,
And I been working like a dog
    It's been a hard day's night,
I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you
I find the things that you do
    Will make me feel alright
    Yowww!
So why on earth should I moan,
'Cause when I get you alone
    You know I feel ok
When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight yeah
    It's been a hard day's night,
And I been working like a dog
    It's been a hard day's night,
I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you
I find the things that you do
    Will make me feel alright
    You know I feel alright
    You know I feel alright

Personal Comments: "A Hard Day's Night" was a phrase that was coined by Ringo when the group began touring nonstop in late 1963. John took the phrase and wrote a song about it, which later became the title track to first full-length motion picture. The song is pretty much about a man who works all day and just wants to get home and relax, almost everyone these days can relate to that.

    "I Should Have Know Better"

I should have known better with a girl like you,
That I would love everything that you do
And I do, hey, hey, hey, and I do.
Whoa, oh, I never realized what a kiss could be,
This could only happen to me
Can't you see, can't you see,
That when I tell you that I love you, oh,
You're gonna say you love me too, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, oh,
And when I ask you to be mine,
You're gonna say you love me too.
So, oh, I should have realized alot of things before
If this is love you gotta give me more
Give me more, hey, hey, hey, give me more.
You love me too, you love me too.

Personal Comments: "I Should Have Know Better" is a fun song with a good beat. Whenever I hear it, it makes me think of the scene where they're perfoming on the train, which really wasn't even a train, it was a truck being rocked back-and-forth by crew members. The harmonica in this song is cool.

    "If I Fell"

If I fell in love with you
Would you promise to be true
    And help me understand
'Cause I've been in love before
And I found that love was more
    Than just holding hands
If I give my heart to you
    I must be sure
    From the very start
That you would love me more than her
If I trust in you oh please
    Don't run and hide
If I love you too oh please
Don't hurt my pride like her
'Cause I couldn't stand the pain
And I would be sad if our new love was in vain
So I hope you see that I
    Would love to love you
    And that she will cry
When she learns we are two
'Cause I couldn't stand the pain
And I would be sad if our new love was in vain
So I hope you see that I
    Would love to love you
    And that she will cry
When she learns we are two
If I fell in love with you

Personal Comments: This is one of the best songs on the album. The song is about real emotions and insecurity. This is the kind of song that proves how good of a songwriter John Lennon really was. The way he can make you see what he sees and feel what he feels is amazing. This song will set the stage for some of his greater works "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds".

"I'm Happy Just To Dance With You"

    Before this dance is through
I think I'll love you too
I'm so happy when you dance with me
I don't want to kiss or hold your hand
If it's funny try and understand
There is really nothing else I'd rather do
'Cause I'm happy just to dance with you
I don't need to hug or hold you tight
I just want to dance with you all night
In this world there's nothing I would rather do
'Cause I'm happy just to dance with you
    Just to dance with you
    Is everything I need
    Before this dance is through
I think I'll love you too
I'm so happy when you dance with me
If somebody tries to take my place
Let's pretend we just can't see his face
In this world there's nothing I would rather do
'Cause I'm happy just to dance with you
    Just to dance with you
    Is everything I need
    Before this dance is through
I think I'll love you too
I'm so happy when you dance with me
If somebody tries to take my place
Let's pretend we just can't see his face
In this world there's nothing I would rather do
I've discovered I'm in love with you
'Cause I'm happy just to dance with you
    Oh, Oh, Oh

Personal Comments: This is the only song on the album where George is given lead vocals. He does a good job of it though, and it makes for a memorable song.

    "And I Love Her"

I give her all my love
    That's all I do
And if you saw my love
    You'd love her too
    I love her
    She gives me everything
    And tenderly
    The kiss my lover brings
    She brings to me
    And I love her
    A love like ours
    Could never die
    As long as I
    Have you near me
Bright are the stars that shine
    Dark is the sky
I know this love of mine
    Will never die
    And I love her
Bright are the stars that shine
    Dark is the sky
I know this love of mine
    Will never die
    And I love her

Personal Comments: This is a nice acoustic tune by Paul. I personlly don't think it's as strong as "If I Fell". It's still a classic though. Paul glides right through the song with his smooth vocal performance and deserves credit for it.

    "Tell Me Why"

Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me,
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me.
Well I gave you everything I had,
But you left me sitting on my own,
Did you have to leave me oh so bad,
All I do is hang my head and moan.
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me,
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me.
If there's something I have said or done,
Tell me what and I'll apologize,
If you don't I really can't go on,
Holding back these tears in my eyes.
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me,
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me.
Well I beg you on my bended knees,
If you'll only listen to my pleas,
Is there anything I can do,
'Cause I really can't stand it, I'm so in love with you.
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me.
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me.

Personal Comments: "Tell Me Why is a great song. It kind of swings more than it rocks. The overall performance of this song is good, but what really stands out above everything in this song is Ringo's drumming between the verses that kind of gives the song a big-band feel.

    "Can't Buy Me Love"

    Can't buy me love, love
    Can't buy me love
I'll buy you a diamond ring my friend
If it makes you feel alright
I'll get you anything my friend
If it makes you feel alright
'Cause I don't care too much for money,
    Money can't buy me love
I'll give you all I got to give
If you say you love me too
I may not have a lot to give
But what I got I'll give to you
I don't care too much for money,
    Money can't buy me love
Can't buy me love, everybody tells me so
Can't buy me love, no no no no
Say you don't need no diamond rings
    And I'll be satisfied
Tell me that you want the kind of things
    That money just can't buy
I don't care too much for money,
    Money can't buy me love
    Owwww!
Can't buy me love, everybody tells me so
Can't buy me love, no no no no
Say you don't need no diamond rings
    And I'll be satisfied
Tell me that you want the kind of things
    That money just can't buy
I don't care too much for money,
    Money can't buy me love
Can't buy me love, love Can't buy me love

Personal Comments: "Can't Buy Me Love" is yet another memorable Paul McCartney classic. The song is full of energy, the guitar solo is awsome and it sends out to everyone the message that money can buy alot of nice things, but it can't buy you love.

    "Any Time At All"

Any time at all, any time at all, any time at all,
All you've gotta do is call and I'll be there.
If you need somebody to love, just look into my eyes,
I'll be there to make you feel right.
If you're feeling sorry and sad, I'd really sympathize.
Don't you be sad, just call me tonight.
Any time at all, any time at all, any time at all
All you've gotta do is call and I'll be there.
If the sun has faded away, I'll try to make it shine,
There is nothing I won't do
If you need a shoulder to cry on I hope it will be mine.
Call me tonight, and I'll come to you.
Any time at all, any time at all, any time at all
All you've gotta do is call and I'll be there.
Any time at all, any time at all, any time at all
All you've gotta do is call and I'll be there.
Any time at all, All you gotta do is call and I'll be there.

Personal Comments: "Any Time At All" is a good song writen around a suspended D chord, it's nothing ground-breaking though.

    "I'll Cry Instead"

I've got every reason on earth to be mad,
'Cause I've just lost the only girl I had.
If I could get my way,
I'd get myself locked up today,
    But I can't so I cry instead.
I've got a chip on my shoulder that's bigger than my feet,
I can't talk to people that I meet.
If I could see you now,
I'd try to make you sad somehow,
    But I can't so I cry instead.
Don't want to cry when there's people there
I get shy when they start to stare
    I'm gonna hide myself away,
But I'll come back again someday.
And when I do you'd better hide all the girls
I'm gonna break their hearts all 'round the world
Yes, I'm gonna break them in two,
And show you what your loving man can do
    Until then I'll cry instead.

Personal Comments: "I'll Cry Instead" is more country and western than anything else it sets the stage for it's much supperior counterpart "I Don't Wanna Spoil The Party" on "Beatles For Sale". I'm not a big fan of country music, but when the Beatles do it, ya know...you gotta love it!

    "Things We Said Today"

You say you will love me
    If I have to go.
    You'll be thinking of me,
    Somehow I will know.
    Someday when I'm lonely,
Wishing you weren't so far away,
    Then I will remember
    The things we said today.
You say you'll be mine, girl,
    Until the end of time.
These days such a kind girl
    Seems so hard to find.
    Someday when we're dreaming,
Deep in love, not a lot to say.
    Then we will remember
    The things we said today.
Me, I'm just the lucky kind.
Love to hear you say that love is luck.
And, though we may be blind,
Love is here to stay. And that's enough
    To make you mine, girl,
    Be the only one.
Love me all the time, girl.
    We'll go on and on.
    Someday when we're dreaming,
Deep in love, not a lot to say.
    Then we will remember
    The things we said today.

Personal Comments: This is an excellent song. John and George open the song with their acoustic guitars setting a dark mood. When Paul comes in with the vocals the tension increases, until the key change where he breaks the ice, trying to make the best of things with the "Someday when we're dreaming..." part. Definetly a goodie.

    "When I Get Home"

    Whoa-ho, whoa-ho,
I got a whole lot of things to tell her
    When I get home.
Come on, out of my way,
'Cause I'm gonna see my baby today,
I've got a whole lot of things I've gotta say to her.
    Whoa-ho, whoa-ho,
I got a whole lot of things to tell her
    When I get home.
    Come on if you please,
I've got no time for trivialities,
I've got a girl who's waiting home for me tonight.
    Whoa-ho, whoa-ho,
I got a whole lot of things to tell her
    When I get home.
When I'm getting home tonight, I'm gonna hold her tight.
I'm gonna love her till the cows come home
I bet I'll love her more
Till I walk out that door again.
    Come on, let me through,
I've got so many things I've got to do,
I've got no business being here with you this way.
    Whoa-ho, whoa-ho,
I got a whole lot of things to tell her
When I get home - yeah.
I got a whole lot of things to tell her
    When I get home

Personal Comments: "When I Get Home" is a good rocker that evens out the varitey of the songs on the album. It separates the rock from the pop and the country western, and the hardcore rap (hehe j/k...THANK GOD!).

    "You Can't Do That"

I got something to say that might cause you pain,
If I catch you talking to that boy again,
    I'm gonna let you down,
    And leave you flat,
Because I told you before, oh,
    You can't do that.
Well, it's the second time I've caught you talking to him,
Do I have to tell you one more time I think it's a sin,
I think I'll let you down.(let you down)
And leave you flat,(gonna let you down and leave you flat)
Because I've told you before, oh,
    You can't do that.
    Everybody's green,
'Cause I'm the one, who won your love,
    But if they'd seen,
You're talking that way they'd laugh in my face.
So please listen to me if you wanna stay mine,
I can't help my feelings I go out of my mind.
I'm gonna let you down,(let you down)
And leave you flat(gonna let you down and leave you flat)
Because I've told you before, oh,
    You can't do that.
    You can't do that.
    You can't do that.
    You can't do that...
    Everybody's green,
'Cause I'm the one, who won your love,
    But if they'd seen,
You're talking that way they'd laugh in my face.
So please listen to me if you wanna stay mine,
I can't help my feelings I go out of my mind.
I'm gonna let you down,(let you down)
And leave you flat(gonna let you down and leave you flat)
Because I've told you before, oh,
    You can't do that.

Personal Comments: "You Can't Do That" is a good follow up rocker to "When I Get Home" by John that talks about greed and jealousy. George breaks out his 12-string Rickenbacker again for this one and plays some excellent leads.

    "I'll Be Back"

You know if you break my heart I'll go,
    But I'll be back again,
'Cause I told you once before goodbye,
    But I came back again.
I love you so oh I'm the one who wants you,
Yes, I'm the one who wants you, oh ho, oh ho, oh
You could find better things to do,
Than to break my heart again,
This time I will try to show that
    I'm not trying to pretend.
I thought that you would realize
That if I ran away from you that you would want me too,
But I've got a big surprise, oh ho, oh ho, oh
You could find better things to do,
Than to break my heart again
This time I will try to show that
    I'm not trying to pretend.
I wanna go but I hate to leave you,
You know I hate to leave you , Oh ho, oh ho, oh
You, if you break my heart I'll go, but I'll be back again.

Personal Comments: John called "I'll Be Back" an early favortie of his. It was one of mine too, but when you listen to their later more introspective stuff it doesn't seem like much. Nevertheless, it's still a good song with a catchy tune.
