The National History of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

The vision of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. became a reality on November 12, 1922 on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven young school teachers. Nannie Mae G. Johnson, Mary L. Gardner Little, Vivian White Marbury, Bessie Martin, Cubena McClure, Hattie M. Dulin Redford, and Dorothy H. Whiteside set forth to create a national service organization that offered women from a variety of professions to develop their leadership abilities and talents through sisterhood, scholarship, and service. In respect to those three mentioned ideals, Sigma Gamma Rho was created to provide an atmosphere where friendships and professional contacts form a bond that last a lifetime. Education became and continues to be a main precept that promotes and encourages high scholastic achievement due to the fact that education for African Americans was a difficult attainment during the time when the founders began the sorority. When it comes to service, Sigma Gamma Rho upholds and maintains a history of offering unlimited service globally and participates actively in improving the quality of life for the communities they serve. Today Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. embodies over 400 chapters with over 72,000 members in the United States, Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, and Bahamas. And the Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service continues......
