Joe Rush
Systems and Programming Manager

With computer experience in PNG going back as far as 1974 at the Bougainville Copper Mine in Panguna, he has been with Air Niugini since joining as Analyst Programmer in 1980.

Combine all these years with previous programming work in Australia, ranging from the BHP Steel Mills in Newcastle, to the rarified atmosphere of Canberra with the then Repatriation Dept., to the remote outback at the bauxite mine/alumina refinery in Gove NT, and Joe has a good claim to being the original curmudgeonly old main frame COBOL dinosaur.

But NO!

Moving with the times, he has not only adapted to the switch to Client/Server but has become an enthusiastic Linux advocate and a keen surfer of the Web.

A married man with four children, apart from work and family, his main interest over the years has been playing Chess and Go. West Australian State Chess Champion in 1962 and 1963, followed by Wollongong City, Newcastle CC and Northern Territory championships led to the front page headline in Peter Parr's chess magazine, "Champion of the Wide Open Spaces". Thanks, Peter.

In PNG he won the National championship four times and represented the country on top board in the World Chess Olympiads in Haifa 1976, Lucerne 1982, Thessalonica 1984 and Dubai 1986.

Less successful in Go, having never won anything at all, he fondly hopes this is only because he has never lived anywhere that had enough Go players to hold a tournament.
