Welcome to Berlin-Somerset County's oldest incorporated Borough

Our town has been home to many varied industries in the past, including: Various mills, tanneries, hat manufacturing, cigar factories,Eureka Pulley Works,a box factory, and the coal industry,to name just a few.

Today our town is home to approximately 2,192 persons, who enjoy our local stores, shops, and business'. Our largest employers today include Snyder Of Berlin and Maple Mountain Manor.

The Berlin Area Historical Society was organized in 1976,and today boasts a membership of over 700 members from all over the United States. In 1988 we purchased our first building,The Heritage Haus, which is a log house built in the 1790's that we have redone into a museum that houses artifacts from many eras in our area's history. It is located on Main Street and we invite you to visit.

In 1992-93 we built and occupied our new 40' x 60' stone cased office and genealogical building. It is located at 400 Vine Street and includes a 20' x 40' fire vault in which are stored many family records,Church records, birth and baptismal records, and obituaries. We also have preserved a complete set of the Berlin Record Newspaper, which was donated to us through the generosity of Paul Wilson, owner of the former Berlin Publishing Company. Our office features a full compliment of modern office machines, including a computer system and copier. It also houses the old Philson Station Post Office from Fairhope. We have many valuable Civil War articles and exhibits,as well as a very early printing press that was used in former printing establishments in Berlin. In our basement area we have many various articles from our early history, including a fine display of a early 20th century schoolroom.Again,we invite you to visit all areas.

Memberships are available by mailing $10 to the above address. A subscription to our quarterly newsletter "Memos" is included in the price
