Lighthouses have a strange and mysterious, even romantic image. Many of us are fascinated by their austere beauty. To learn more about one of these Lighthouses, click on the lighthouse name.

Heceta Light, Oregon
"When darkness overtakes the godly, light will come bursting in."
Psalm 112:4

Heceta Light is one of the most photographed Lights in the US ... and one of my personal favorites.
Construction of the lighthouse was completed in 1894. Construction of this light took nearly two years and cost $180,000--quite a large sum in 1894. Construction stone from the Clackamas River near Oregon City was shipped to the site, as well as bricks and cement from San Francisco. Wood from Oregon mills was rafted to the cove below Heceta Head.

Annisquam Harbor Light, MA
"He floods the darkness with light; He brings light to the darkest gloom."
Job 12:22

The 41-foot Federal-style brick tower that stands in the harbor now, was built in 1897. In 1922, the kerosene-fueled light and fifth order Fresnel lens were replaced by an electrified fourth order lens. The new light increased the brightness Annisquam's Light from 1,300 candlepower to 250,000 candlepower.

~ The Light ~

Off in the distance a tiny Light,
Beckons one and all,
Through the raging storms or the darkest night
The beam of a stoic Light.

The wind howls, waves are rough
Against each tiny boat,
But nothing is ever strong enough
To silence the eternal note.

The song of the gulls echos my heart,
Beside the fury of the sea,
They struggle hard against the unknown,
Longing to be free.

And in the distance, the glimmer grows
Tho its sometimes hard to see,
High on a hill the Light still glows
And reaches out to me.

Bishop & Clerks Light, Hyannis, Mass
"For You are the fountain of life, the light by which we see." Psalm 36:9

Gibraltar Point, Lighthouse Toronto, Ontario
"Light shines on the godly and joy on those who do right." Psalm 97:11

This lighthouse was one of the earliest on the Great Lakes and was completed in 1808 as an hexagonal tower 50 feet high topped by a wooden cage with a fixed whale oil lantern. In 1832, it was raised to 82 feet and eventually equipped with a revolving light. The mysterious disappearance of its first keeper, J. P. Rademuller, in 1815, and the subsequent discovery nearby of part of a human skeleton enhanced its reptuation as a haunted building.
Erected by the Ontario Archaeological and Historic Sites Board.

Fire Island Lighthouse, Long Island, NY

"God rescued me from the grave, and now my life is filled with light."
Job 33:28

Great view, huh! From the lens of Point Bonita Light Station, CA
"Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path." Psalm 119:105

On a recent trip to Charleston, SC, my daughter and I had the pleasure of investigating both the Sullivan's Island Lighthouse (pictured left), and the Morris Light, pictured below, as seen from Folly Beach.
