I have been drawing most of my life. My mom tells me that I had a pencil and paper in my hand since I was 1 1/2 years old! I have worked with oil paints, acrylics, watercolor, airbrush, pen and ink, pencils and pastels. My favorite was working in pencil, but about a year and a half ago, I started working in pastels and found it to be rewarding. I used to loathe working in pastels when I was in school, but something made me try them again, and I found my niche. I now work almost exclusively with pastels and have aquired quite a variety of brands to experiment with. I use and have used

    Rowney

    NuPastel

    Winsor & Newton

    Rembrandt

    Schmincke

    Sennelier

    Yarka

    Grumbacher

    Girault

Nouvel Carre`- these Japanese pastels are no longer made and some are too hard for velour or suede paper.

I only have a modest amount of each of these types of pastels as expense is a big issue for me. I use Pastel pencils for the smaller drawings and for fine detail. I use

    Stabilo Carb-Othello,

    Conte`,

    General's

    Derwent.

I would like to expand my Derwent set. I could only afford to buy the 6 color sampler, but the white and brown that came out of that set are wonderful! I also have bought a 12 color set of the Koh-I-Noor pastel pencils, but found them too hard to work on Suede or Velour paper.

My paper of choice is Suede paper, followed by velour paper and then Art Spectrum colourfix primed paper. The Suede paper is perfect for portraits. The texture of the paper creates interesting, shimmering highlights as can be seen most clearly on the Rottweilers done on the dark blue suede paper. The pastels just take so well to the Suede and velour paper and you can achieve a greater level of realism by using those two papers.

I have a great love of animals both wild and domestic and that is my first love when drawing. I also love fantasy, comic and horror art as can be seen below. KISS is my favorite band and also a source of artistic inspiration for me. I used to watch wrestling alot back in the late 80's to the mid 90's. It was a source of inspiration and it taught me how to draw people.

I mosly now draw animals and have done custom pet portraits for people. I also sell portraits on Ebay and have just started doing that about 5 months ago. I'm still learning and experimenting with selling and it gets downright scary sometimes. But It's so nice to hear the compliments of people who have received my work. The compliments are the best part. I love to please people with my art and that is the greatest reward.

I have a link at the bottom of this page that will link you to my other art. There are drawings of comic characters, My werewolf and fantasy creature drawings and some other drawings that I have done. These catagories will change as I get this site more organized and get to know what I'm doing a little more.

I do plan on adding other drawings later, but for now, that's all I have uploaded. Please click on the thumbnails to see the large pic.

Animals

Many of the drawings in this section have been sold on Ebay. They are now in homes all over the country.

This Great White Shark was done on black Artagain paper and is very striking. The scan is not all that great, but the picture turned out great!

This tiger was done on Rowney ingres laid paper.

This is a Black Footed Ferret. They are not to be confused with the Domestic ferret. The Black Footed Ferret is not the ancestor to our domestic ferret. This ferret was done on regular Canson Mi-Tientes pastel paper.

This is a former co-worker's Rottweiler. The photo used for this drawing was a polaroid and it was very tiny and didn't show alot of detail. The drawing came out very well considering the quality of the photograph used. I gave this drawing to her as a Birthday gift. She was responsible for getting me back into my drawing again and it was the least I could do for her.

These next two Rottweilers are demonstrating the differences between Suede paper (the first picture) and the smoother side of Canson Mi-Tientes paper. The Suede gives smoother more realistic results as you can see. I love Suede and velour paper!!

These two Pugs are done on two different papers as well. The first one is done on light blue Suede paper. it took me over 7 hours to complete. The second pug was done on a light brown velour paper and I darkened it a bit with a brown pastel. Velour paper does not have the shimmery texture like Suede does and you need to put in a background to cover the flatness of the paper. Velour is excellent if you plan to use it for a pastel painting where you'll use all of the paper for your subject and background.

These two dogs were commissioned by my supervisor. These were his two best dogs over the years and they have long since passed away. I did them on the same color suede paper and matted and framed them the same way so that they wouldn't look so odd if they were hung close to each other.

This is another commissioned portrait and the person also had me mat and frame it. It's done on a creamy color suede paper.

This is another commissioned portrait. The owner wanted the background included and I'm so glad that she did. It just made such an impact that it would not have been the same if it was only the portrait. This was done on white velour paper. She'd chosen a black frame, but it would have looked good in a brown wood frame as well! Either way, I'm very proud of this portrait.

This is an adorable English Mastiff puppy named Milo. This is a commissioned piece done on a light green suede paper.

This is a commissioned piece from a co-worker. This is her dog when she was a puppy. The dog is now about 13 years old. This picture is now hanging in my co-worker's farmhouse kitchen. It's done on a light blue suede paper.

This is my first cat commission. It's done on light green suede paper. I was really happy with how this turned out and so was the owner! The compliments are the best part about doing commissioned portraits! :)

this is my first 3 dog multi-pet portrait. It's done on 12 x 16 suede matboard. I really had so much fun doing this portrait. I love the muti-pet portraits! They take a very long time, but they are a nice challenge.

I just love this portrait. When you do art, some pictures just stand out among the rest and this is one of them. This portrait was done on 11 x 14 suede matboard. When I do the multi-pet portraits, I must use either normal pastel paper or suede matboard. the suede paper does not come any larger than about 8 1/2 x 11. The suede matboard is expensive at $11.50 for both the 11 x 14 and 12 x 16 sheets. I was shocked that the prices were the same for both but I guess they go by how much of the full sheet they have to use. The results are worth the money spent on it though in my opinion.

The models for these kissing ferrets are my first two Ferrets, Loki and Charon. I snapped the photo at just the right time and this is the result! This was matted and framed in and 8x 10 frame. Sadly, Charon passed away on 5/12/2004. He'd been going downhill and his eyes told me that it was time. We took him to the vet and they put him to sleep. He went very peacefully. He now rests right next to Rocky and I'm sure they are having the times of their lives with each other again.

My standard working size is so that the drawing can be matted to fit an 11 x 14 frame. These were all done to fit an 11 x 14 frame. the first two drawings are done on Art Spectrum Colourfix paper. It has a similar texture to very fine sandpaper. The third drawing is done on a cream color suede paper

This drawing is one that I did of the stallion "Impressive Messiah" who resides at a horse farm that I worked at years ago. As you can see, the photo is not that great. It was taken with a little 110 camera out on a very bright day. the photo is washed out so it was very hard for me to see the actual color of the horse. It's also very small which made doing good detail very hard. I would not be able to do a pet portrait for someone else from a photo like this. I'd need more clear photos, showing more detail, better color and filling a larger space. I actually cropped this photo for this site to show more of the horse. I went from memory to do this drawing as well as some help from a horse magazine that had "Impressive" on the cover. I bought the magazine as soon as I took a look at the cover. I told the owner of Messiah that Impressive looks just like him. She then told me that Impressive is his grandfather. Pretty cool! Messiah is a brighter chestnut than Impressive if my memory serves me right.

This photo is not the best and i had some smudging happen on it. But this was just a fun drawing to experiment with my new set of pastel that I had gotten. This horse is the horse that I took lessons on when I rode. He was a more advanced lesson horse but he was alot of fun. His name is Zak and he was my bestest bud! :P :) His clown personality was endearing. He is an unmarked Appaloosa. He has only 3 frosted spots on his rump.
