David Swartley can still recall a time when what is now the Skippack Dry Cleaners was the Centre Square firehouse; there was no traffic congestion along Route 202; and dairy farms stretched across the land that is now a luxury home development.
"We only had the village of Center Square, where Reed's department store was. Everything else was farms and an occasional house here and there," said Swartley, 75.
A lifelong Whitpain resident, Swartley has lived in the family homestead on Route 202 for 45 years. While the outside world has built up all around him, Swartley's property, lifestyle and the artifacts that surround him hearken back to a simpler place and time.
Although he has gas heat, on cool autumn days Swartley prefers to warm his house, built circa 1900, with the original wood-burning stove.
When Swartly was a child, the stove kept him warm when the "severe cold winter winds would sweep down the valley."
Swartley, one of six children, also recalled the adventures of his youth, like peeping into the kitchen of "Bill Reed's (then hotel, the Waggon Inn), watching him and his wife cook meals."
"Across the street was a (horse) stable for the hotel," said Swartley. And the shopping center which houses Kohl's discount store, Clemens market and other businesses was Charlie Murphy's farm.
During his youth in the 1930s, '40s and '50s, Swartley, who never married, attended church, Sunday School and the occasional social event, such as a Halloween party or screening of a movie at the Centre Square fire station.1979 M vi Harold William Swartley was born on 28 Jul 1927 in Center Square, Montgomery, Pa.
