Evelyn Jane was called Jane from birth, spent the first 2 1/2 years of her life living with her parents in the home of her widowed maternal grandmother Emmaline Elizabeth (Steigerwalt) Kleckner, then 59-61 years old. Also living there were three of her father's sisters, Stella, Eva, and Emma. In the summer of 1926 Jane's parents moved their young family to 414 West Douglass Street, and in 1936 to 426 West Oley Street, both in Reading, Pa. She attended Schuylkill Avenue and Greenwich elementary school, Northwest Junior High School, and Reading High School, graduating from the latter in June, 1941.
Jane received R.N. from Philadelphia General Hospital in 1945. She enlisted in the U.S.Army Nurse Corps, but during her enlistment physical it was discovered that she had active tuberculosis. She spent the next year on bed rest, the approved treatment in 1945. In 1947 she married Charles D. Sassaman of Reading, Pa and gave birth to 7 children over the following ten years. She brought them
all up and saw that they were well educated, many through university and some through graduate school. In 1960 Jane returned to work as an R.N., spending the next 21 years successively in local hospitals, in a physician's office, and in a Penn. State facility for the mentally retarded as a psychiactric nurse. In 1981 she retired to gardening, traveling, and doing some social work.

Charles was born in Kamiah ID where his father William was working at an Indian trading post. In 1924 the family returned to Reading, Pa. for a visit with family, at which time William died, probably from a cerebral aneurism. Charles's mother, Charles and his sister Margaret remained in Reading, living with a maiden aunt. He attended Schuylkill Avenue and Greenwich Elementary School, the Douglass and Weiser Junior High School, and Reading High School, graduating from the latter in June, 1939. He then spent three years working at Maier's Bakery in Reading. In 1942 he was drafted into the U.S.Army, serving in the First Div. in the European Theater during W.W.II. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge of W.W.II, and was discharged in October 1945, two months after the war ended. In 1946 he took a job at Firestone Rubber Co. in Pottstown, Pa. Firestone was later acquired by Occidental Chemical Co.,from which after 38 years he retired in 1984.
