At approximately 2 years of age, Victor's family moved to Emmet, Ida., where he attended school. On March 7, 1928 his mother died of pneumonia. The family stayed in Emmet until December 28, 1932, when Victor's father died as the result of a stroke. At this time, Victor and his older sister Ruth went to live with Frank and Mary Stegerwalt, their paternal uncle and aunt. Victor graduated from Payette High School in the spring of 1937. He came back to Iowa and attended Iowa State School for a semester. While attending school he worked at a bowling alley setting pins. He held various other jobs which included: picking fruit at numerous orchards in Idaho and he assisted his aunts and uncles with raising watermelons and canteloupes in their truck farming business. In the fall they would take a trip to Entiak, Iowa to pick fruit. He also worked as a ranch hand in Nevada on a sheep ranch, and for a short time he worked as a short order cook's assistant in a mining camp in Nevada. Victor was attending the Boeing Aircraft School in Wash., state when the war broke out on December 7, 1941. He immediately applied and became a member of the Army Air Force. He was shipped out to Biloxi, Miss., where he took his basic trainng. On completion of additional training at ACTF Arms School and attending school at Lowry Field in Colorado, Pvt. Steigerwalt went overseas to serve in the European Field of battle, where he worked as ground crew on a variety of different planes during this time of service. On June 19, 1945 he returned to the states. He received an Honorable Discharge on June 27, 1945 as a Sergeant at the Separation Center at Fort Douglas, Utah. Victor returned to Idaho for a time before returning to Iowa. He worked as a farm hand for Herb Lepke in 1945, at which time he was introduced to Frances Virginia Vaughan. After a short courtship Victor and Frances were married, and they became the parents of four children. The family lived on the same farm for 39 years. Besides farming, Victor worked at American Athletic Co., and Franklin Manufacturing, retiring from Franklin Manufacturing in the fall of 1982. They gave up their farm life in August of 1987. While preparing to move into their current home in Jefferson, Victor suffered a stroke. Victor and Frances spent three winters in Ariz., one winter in Fla., and the remainder of their winters in Alamo, Tex. Victor was a member of the Odd Fellows of Bagley and the Green Campers. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, square dancing, collecting rocks, and traveling.
