The Unit Commissioner is a generalist, whose mission is to help units succeed.

Many Unit Commissioners serve more than one type of unit, sometimes serving all the units sponsored by a particular chartered organization, or perhaps Boy Scouts or Cubs or Exploring only.

In Pennsbury District we will work together to place Unit Commissioners in areas where they are most comfortable, and where they are most needed. If you don't know who your unit commissioner is, please contact me.

Your Unit Commissioner should be your first line of contact when information is needed!!

If  you dont have a Unit Commissioner or dont know who it is see list below.

The Unit Commissioner's main duties include:

1) Help each unit earn the Quality Unit Award.

 2) Know the appropriate Scouting programs pertaining to each unit and be able to explain them.

3) Visit unit meetings.

4) Visit unit leaders and make sure they are trained.

 5) Contact the unit committees periodically.

6) Keep in touch with chartered organizations.

7) Know the District and Council.

8) Set good example by helping out, wearing full uniform, etc.

 9) Get training when opportunity arises.

10) Encourage unit leader's attendance at Roundtables.

 11) Make sure leaders are registered.

12) Help units to ensure on-time charter renewal.

13) Act as a liason between the unit and the district/council.

14) Be a friend

These duties are not listed in any particular order, one point being as important as the next.

At Recharter time( October for us!) the Unit Committee should meet with the unit commissioner to go over details of how to fill out the forms and determine whether the unit will earn the Quality Unit Award.  A  follow-up meeting should be planned just before re-charter night to check everything out. This should not be the only time you see your unit commissioner!  Invite your UC to pack meetings or banquets, to allow them to make presentations such as charters, or just to be there to lend a hand.

Unit Commissioners attend monthly meetings to report on the general state of their units. Most units require very little attention outside of that which can be handled by the U.C., but others need more help and these meetings can sometimes result in finding solutions to their needs.  Among the items that are often discussed is how to increase membership,  keep Cubs moving up to Boy Scouts, units in need of leaders, units in need of sponsors.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!  There is a shortage of Unit Commissioners in Pennsbury District. Please consider serving just one unit in the district, I promise you training and support!  You need to attend a meeting monthly (1st Wednesday each month, 7pm-8pm) and submit a report on your units one week in advance to facilitate planning.  If you think you might be interested, contact Dan Mulhern.font>
