The following assignments must be completed for this course. Assignments are due by the dates indicated for each. Make sure you meet these target dates to ensure your successful completion of this course, especially those that are identified as part of your Website project. Note: We will not be covering/learning Chapters 1, 8, and 9 of Hubbell, which include an introduction to UNIX, server side includes, and restricting WEB site access. The concepts of those chapters are not necessary for your understanding of the other chapters. I expect you to read the instructor's guide to Hubbell ("Chapter Notes"). We will be using only certain pages from the Williams and Tollett text. Likewise, I expect you to read the instructor's guide to Williams & Tollett. The assigned readings appear below, and you can click on your textbook's cover to access my notes. There will be some additional reading that appears on the Web for your skill development. You'll notice that there are more assigned readings up front to prepare you for the "hands on" Website project that requires more time on the back end of this course, so start turning those textbook pages and expand your "memory banks"! There's a lot to learn and enjoy. I encourage you to search the Web for supplementary information and to explore links provided on my Angelfire Website.

Assignment #1
Task:

You may want to install at home the following software to complete this course: Microsoft Internet Explorer browser Version 5.5, Netscape Navigator browser Version 4.74 (Better than Version 6), Microsoft's PhotoEditor (installation instructions), WS_FTP_LE, Arachnophilia, Microsoft's Word 97/2000, and MapEdit. I've provided links for the freeware/shareware here. Because MapEdit is shareware (it is free for only 30 days), I recommend that you send to Boutell.com information that you are a student. They'll provide you a "registration key", so the software will not eventually disable itself. We will look at MapEdit only briefly in this course.

If you do not have Office 97/2000, then you can use simple NotePad to type your project (Website) description instead of using Word. Also, you can download a freeware program called VCW VicMan's Photo Editor. It isn't as easy to work with as Microsoft's Photo Editor, but hey, it's FREE - although their program will frequently "ask" you if you'd like to register (pay) for the program. The free version does not offer all of the features that the registered version provides.

Assignment #6
Title: Chapter 2 - Short description of your Website project (p. 32 of Hubbell's Understanding Web Development) AND Site Map
Note: Your Website MUST contain an introduction page (home page), your resume, 2 pages about one of your hobbies, and another page about your family (or another page about a second hobby of yours). See example site map.
Project Graphic
Instructions:

Describe your Website project keeping in mind the requirements specified above in the title of this assignment. I do not want to receive Web pages about technical subjects. This site is about YOU. Also, if your Web page is about a hobby of yours, then write about how you participate in this hobby, what it is that you like about this hobby, what collectibles you might have, the organizations that you belong that are related to this hobby if any, how you share this hobby with others, what meetings and/or events you attended, what these events and/or activities were like. In other words, do not just copy information about this hobby. Instead talk about yourself in conjunction with this hobby. This Website is to be about YOU. Copying content from the Web will result in a grade of zero for each page that has this plagiarized content.

You should modify the site map example that I have posted on my Angelfire Website: Example Site Map. I will expect your collection of Web pages to match the site map that you submit. In addition, note that only 3 of your pages are to be linked to your home page. That's what my example Site Map depicts. Make sure your site map reflects what you want to do for this project. You may NOT change it later, so be sure to give it some extra thought before hand.

Bring a printed copy of your Website description (typed, double-spaced, 1 full page) & site map to your next class.
