Oranges in Syrup Recipe

6 large, juicy oranges
1 cup granulated sugar
5 ounces water (1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon) or 147.87 milliliters
1 tablespoon apricot jam
3 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons orange-chocolate liqueur (such as Sabra brand, which is kosher for Passover)

Instructions for the Oranges in Syrup recipe:

  1. Grate 2 tablespoons zest (colored portion of peel) from oranges.
  2. Set zest aside.
  3. Peel oranges, removing all the pith (white portion); cut fruit into slices. Transfer to a bowl.
  4. Make a syrup by dissolving the sugar in the water in a small saucepan and adding the apricot jam.
  5. Simmer over medium heat for 3 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat; stir in zest, lemon juice and liqueur.
  7. Pour over oranges.
  8. Refrigerate for several hours, basting the fruit once or twice.

Yield: Makes 6 to 8 servings.
