The Lithuanian Citizens' Society offers and sponsors a number of cultural programs that bring opportunities for members of the local Lithuanian community to learn more about their heritage and keep abreast of current events in Lithuania.
The Citizens Society sponsors the Lithuanian group participation in the Annual Pittsburgh Folk Festival. The Lithuanian group has participated in the Festival every year since its inception over 45 years ago. Their participation includes a cultural display booth, a Lithuanian food booth, and traditional Lithuanian folk dances by the Neris Dancers.
Longtime member, the late Gail Bartkus, admires the dolls in Lithuanian Costume that she made and displayed at the Pittsburgh Folk Festival over the years. Gail graciously donated the dolls to the Society before her death so that they can be displayed along with many other items of cultural interest at the Citizens' Society Hall.
Society members and guests celebrate Jonines at the Lithuanian Country Club on the Saturday closest to St. John's Day each year.
Our most successful cultural events in many years occurred in the Fall of 1999 when for the first time in recent memory the Society hosted a performing group from Lithuania. The performance by the group Saule from Siauliai University received rave reviews. Below are some photos of some of their singers, musicians and dancers in action during their performance in Pittsburgh. The Society also hosted the renowned Lithuanian Folk Musicians "Sutaras" in October of 2004 and brought back the musicians from Saule in 2006 to perform at the 50th anniversary of the Pittsburgh Folk Festival.
