Take individual lessons at Tobin Studios to help you learn to play guitar and / or bass with James Tobin in a fun and encouraging environment. Jim offers guitar lessons for all ages and skill levels at his Ambridge studio. In home lessons are available for an additional fee. All you need is an acoustic, electric or bass guitar and the will to practice, improve and have fun in the process. Many students Jim has taught over the years started with him as beginners, kept learning, and practicing, and developed into solid guitarists / musicians in their own right.

Things our former students have gone on to do include:

  • Starting their own bands,
  • Playing their own shows,
  • Becoming songwriters,
  • Performing as solo artists,
  • Performing in groups,
  • Using what they learn to continue their education at charter schools & colleges.
  • Teaching guitar to friends and at other studios.
  • Going on tour.



    • In addition you may be a guitar player who just needs a reason to learn a few new things to keep their interest up, for this our one-on-one weekly lessons are just the ticket to keep you moving. Over the years, Jim has cultivated a unique gift for presenting guitar lessons in a way that is clear and easy to comprehend. His teaching style is patient and encouraging. You too can enjoy playing guitar or bass in the style and level you want. You select the songs / style you want to learn and perform. Our goal is for you to improve over time and become a self sustaining musician capable of playing solo as well as in a group, there are no cookie cutter lessons here. You will also be encouraged to write your own songs, and given opportunities to play live in a non-recital setting, both solo and in a group. Whatever your playing goals Jim will set you on course for a lifetime of enjoyment with guitar. Whether you want to play for fun, be a weekend strummer, participate in jams, play in a band, accompany your singing, write songs or be a concert virtuoso, Jim will help you achieve your goals. If you are interested in guitar, you will benefit from Jim's expertise in many styles of music. Jim has played & recorded solo acoustic, in bands, and in a wide variety of environments & venues, and this has made him capable of playing many different genres of music.

    Jim's many years of performing, recording and teaching have enabled him to develop a unique method for teaching guitar. Step by step, he will lead beginners to a solid understanding of all the basics. Intermediate and advanced students will enjoy progressing through the songs, techniques and theory of their chosen style of music.



    Lessons in GUITAR, BASS and SONG WRITING are available at the Studio from September to June.

  • Arrangements can be made for online summer lessons as well.
  • Children through Adults welcome, ages 5 to 80
  • Lessons are available in Jim's studio or "in your home." There is an additional fee for "in-home lessons." Beginner,
  • Intermediate and Advanced students are welcome!
  • Lessons are taught individually - one student at a time. No hiding in the back row :-)
  • Guitar styles taught include Indie, Folk, Country, Pop, Rock, Classic Rock, Blues, and Jazz.


    $70.00 per month for thirty minute lessons (one lesson a week), due at the first of the month.
