I can't believe that Halloween has come and gone and now Thanksgiving is around the corner. We have so much to be thankful for. Even though we all get stressed out around the Holidays it's important to stop and remember how blessed we are.

We had a wonderful Halloween party. I wasn’t able to be there since I was at the Ohio PTA convention, but my husband and children were there. I got rave reviews from them and I loved the balloons and picture frames they brought home. I told my husband to take pictures and I can’t wait to see them. Once again thanks to Cindy McGuire and Rita Basalla for a great party. Thanks to everyone who helped with the party in any way.

As I mentioned before, Joyce Hinkle and I went to the Ohio PTA convention in Columbus the weekend of October 23rd and 24th. We had a wonderful time and we both learned some new things we hope to pass along to everyone.

In last months Tricycle I thanked a lot of our members who had taken positions last year and did work over the summer to help get this year off to a great start. Now I would like to thank our members who took positions at our September meeting or who have positions that start later in the year. Thank you to Mary Colovas who took Refreshments and Playgroups, Lisa Amato- Community Services, Cindy McGuire- Environmental, Parent/Teacher, and Special Ed., Donna Santabarbara- Geraniums, Joyce Hinkle- Nutrition, Cheryl Moser, Patty Hajnosz and Colleen Karaffa- Spring Party, Marilou Silvestro and Karen Lekan- Safety Town, Heidi Wessel- Scrapbook, Linda Barnett - Heinz Labels, Tops and Giant Eagle receipts and Box Tops for Education collections, and to our Elementary Schools PTA Delegates: Colleen Karaffa- Dag, Patty Andrasek- Dentzler, Kim Beaulieu- Green Valley, and Kristina Poland- John Glen. Thank you everyone for pitching in!!

Our next meeting is Nov. 9, 1999 at 6:45 P.M. We’ll have a short meeting (really!) and then our delicious pot luck dinner. Come enjoy with us! Keep selling those Entertainment Books. Let’s get all 200 sold!

Say "Yes 2 Kids" by showing them how to be thankful for all the good things they have!!

Halloween was great this year! Beautiful children in their costumes, wonderful Fall weather, and the BROWNS won a Game! Yahoo! Go Browns!

By the time everyone receives this newsletter, it’ll be time to confront the business of holiday preparation and shopping. Be sure to take time out for yourself (10-15 minutes of "mommy-time-out") and to be thankful for your blessings. In December, we will have a game night (BINGO!) and social hour to celebrate this most wonderful time of the year. Everyone is asked to bring a snack, beverage, or appetizer to make this night more festive. If you missed the sign up at our November meeting/dinner, please call me and I’ll suggest something for you to bring (besides your smile and best holiday cheer).

I’d like to encourage a "White Elephant" gift exchange for all those interested. Just find an old household item, book, decoration, item of clothing, etc. . . Wrap it up for the holiday and bring it unmarked to the December meeting. We all have the "White Elephants" lying around the house, so roll up your sleeves, dig them out and let’s have some good laughs.

Treasures from Trash

Resealable Plastic Bags

Garbage Bag Gameboards

Yarn Dispenser

Pop Bottle Planters

Pain Brushes

Cut used, pink fabric-softener sheets into fourths. Then fold a section into fourths and wrap it over the end of a drinking straw. Tape in place and it is ready to use. These paintbrushes are great for painting leaves, flowers, and lots more.

Crayon Cans

A good alternative for storing crayons since crayon boxes easily tear apart are ready-to-spread icing cans. Ask parents to save them and send them in all year long so the supply will last long enough for the next year’s class. Cover the cans with contact paper. Children can easily manipulate the plastic lids and recognize their names from the labels on their cans.

Is something missing on your holiday table? Serve water with your special meal, and keep up your everyday health habit. Extra large meals, party snacks, and alcohol will have your body craving water. So this holiday be sure to get your 8-eight ounce glasses of H2O!

Are you planning on trying a new recipe for your holiday guests? Be sure of the results by giving it a trial run. Practice is especially worthwhile for low-cal or low-fat substitutions, and any unfamiliar ingredients or techniques. It might seem like double the work, but you will cut down on last-minute stress and avoid "new recipe" disasters.

Your young children will be thankful if you consider them specially in holiday meal planning. Encourage them to try the traditional holiday foods. But in addition offer a simple, everyday favorite kid food on the buffet. Enjoy the abundance of food, get some exercise, and have a Happy Thanksgiving!!

Happy November!

The gears have been shifted and we are off to a great start for our fundraising. This year our unit will be participating in both the Kohls and Kaufmanns fundraising projects. Kohls is a onetime commitment to bag (or fold or general straightening) on one of their scheduled days. Our unit will receive $5.50 for every hour you commit to and you will receive their generous employee discount for the day. Kaufmanns has changed their program from last year making it easier for everyone to make money. All you need to do is commit to work on designated shopping days and for every 8 hr. shift our unit receives $20. You get $6 an hour plus the 25% employee discount from your first day through your last day. You also have the option of a paid training to work on the register or a come on in an fold and fluff position.

The dates for both of these programs will be available at the November meeting. Please consider volunteering for one of these fun easy programs. Either way its a great way to help our unit and save on your shopping.

Our big fundraiser for the year is an exciting NEW concept...

Baby, Toddler and Preschool Fair

January 22 10-4 at Valley Forge High School

We will be selling tables to preschools, child care centers, toy stores, gymnastic and dance lessons, and all the other kid oriented businesses as well as having a kids "sell it again" sale.

"Sell it again" tables are only $15

Exhibitor tables are only $30

We will also sponsor our snack stop and bake sale

Please start spreading the word about this exciting event. It promises to be lots of fun for parents and children alike.

Contracts and flyers will be available at the November meeting.

Any questions or if you can help please call Laura Ponikvar 216-573-1518
