THE TRICYCLE - SEPTEMBER 1999

President

Andrea Kalvas

Hi everyone! Welcome back to another exciting year of fun with Parma Early Childhood PTA- Normandy Cluster. As usual summer has gone by to fast but nevertheless it's time to get the year off to a great start. I would like to thank all of our members who have already been working over the summer to plan activities for us to enjoy.

My name is Andrea Kalvas. I've been a member of Parma Early Childhood PTA for ten years. Throughout those years I've held various positions from Membership to Treasurer. I've had so much fun and have met wonderful friends. This is truly a fantastic organization for mothers of preschoolers. It's a way to meet people and do things with your children that you probably otherwise would not do. My children have loved the field trips, activities, and parties. My Husband's name is Tom, we've been married for 12 years and have three boys ages 10, 8, and 3. I'm a stay-at-home mom my husband is a Computer Engineer. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again and to meeting our new members.

We will hold our first meeting on September 14,1999 at 7.00 p.m. at Green Valley Elementary School on Pleasant Valley Road. The first meeting of the year is very important so plan to attend. We still have some positions that need to be filled so if you haven't taken a position yet please consider one of them. Many positions only require a small amount of time. We'll be a much stronger organization if everyone pitches in. If you know of a position you would like and want to sign up before the first meeting feel free to give me a call.

In keeping with the new millennium and all the Y2K stuff the theme I chose for the year is Yes 2 Kids. Let's try to say Yes 2 Kids by meeting their needs and saying yes when they ask for our love and attention. Let's say Yes 2 Kids by creating a better future for them. Let's say yes to our kids by making this one of the best years of Parma Early Childhood PTA - Normandy Cluster!

Welcome to the 2nd year of the Normandy Cluster of Parma Early Childhood PTA! I am the wife of a Physician's Assistant named Randy, parent of a 4 1/2 yr. old son and a 15 month old daughter, and 'Mom' to 2 large dogs, Amber & Molson (so you think my husband or I like beer, maybe?). In my spare time I attend Browns games, play piano and dream about the day I can go dancing and/or rollerblading again!

My position this year as program chairperson has been challenging. Unlike most other positions, my job is 75% complete when the PTA year begins. I've developed this year's program booklet and set up all of our activities or speakers for each meeting. In keeping with the Yes 2 Kids theme, I've tried to involve speakers who will address children's issues as well as keeping us healthy and happy as mothers of preschoolers. How can you parent a child successfully if you do not first take care of yourself! Therefore, we will have speakers on Self- Defense (Oct.) and keeping your sense of humor as a pedestrians). I have a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (a D.O., not an M. D.) who is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine to speak to us before Spring arrives (April) on Preventing Childhood Emergencies.

As we are a big group, Andrea, the Board and I decided it best to focus more on socializing (we have so much to

offer each other as Moms/ wives/ women). So there are dinners/Mom's night out/craft night/ and a special holiday game night/social hour planned. You get out of this organization all that you put into it (and then some!), so PLEASE, Be Involved! Participate and have fun and I'm sure you will be a better parent for your preschooler because of it!

> Marsha Harrison spoke about the 31/2 million dollars worth of cuts made in the school system and the changes in staff at both the administrative and school levels. She reminded us that we have much to be proud of in our school system and we must vote to pass the levies on the ballot in November.

>The cultural arts theme this year is "Anything is Possible".

Nutrition

As we did last year, I will be collecting coupons for baby foods, formulas, diapers and wipes at the meetings so that we may exchange them You may also bring any nutritional items(cereals, baby food in jars, canned or other forms of formula, etc.) you are no longer using if they are still useable-that is, not past the expiration date noted. Hopefully you can share or find something for your infant/toddler/preschooler at the meeting!

Thanks in advance for your cooperation and help with this coupon/food exchange.

 Sincerely, Joyce Hinkle

Don't forget that membership is due at the first meeting. The cost has remained the same as last year, $8.00.
