The Waterboy Buy it now!
Starring Adam Sandler, Kathy Bates, Fairuza Balk & Henry Winkler Written by Tim Herlihy & Adam Sandler Directed by Frank Coraci Adam Sandler is the best thing Saturday Night Live has produced in years that hasn't died. His first two films, Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore were moderately successful, but after The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy, he may soon be approaching Jim Carrey-dom. All of Sandler's movies are extremely systematic, and The Waterboy is not different. It isn't as funny as Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, or even The Wedding Singer, so what is making it so successful? My guess is that it combines Sandler's charismatic comedy with a sports drama. Kathy Bates (Misery, Titanic) costars as Bobby Boucher's (Adam Sandler) mother. In looked like a sly spoof of Forrest Gump, Bates kept her slow son sheltered from the world. When Henry Winkler ("Happy Days", Scream) discovers Bobby's football talent, Bobby goes behind his mother's back to help out the pathetic college team. In a plot turn similar to Rocky II, Bates is in the hospital, and Bobby refuses to play in the Bourbon Bowl without his mother's blessing. If you've seen Rocky II, you can guess what happens.

Adam Sandler was born on September 9, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Manchester, New Hampshire. His first brush with comedy was at age 17 when his brother encouraged him to go on stage spontaneously at a Boston comedy club. Until then, comedy had never entered his mind as a profession, but after his first appearance, he was hooked.
He later attended New York University, earning a degree in Fine Arts. While still in college, he continued to perform regularly in comedy clubs and universities throughout New York. He gained a spot on The Cosby Show as a friend of Theo. Shortly thereafter, he was recruited from the stand-up world (via MTV's Remote Control) and then landed a coveted spot as part of the Saturday Night Live cast, first appearing in the 1990/91 season.
With SNL for five years, as both a writer and performer, Sandler gained national recognition creating a host of unique characters including "Cajun Man," "Opera Man," "Canteen Boy," "Herlihy Boy" and "the host of the 'Denise Show.'" He also performed memorable impersonations of Axl Rose and Eddie Vedder, and did guest spots on the popular "Weekend Update." One irate L.A. Times reader described Saturday Night Live's Adam Sandler after the paper ran a profile on him as "The most talentless, juvenile and offensive member of the current cast."
Adam's career expanded more with the release of They're all gonna laugh at you! in September 1993 and he immediately went on to receive a Grammy nomination, even as it made its unprecedented run up the charts, spending over 100 weeks on Billboard's Heatseekers listings alone. The album spawned the hit single "Lunchlady Land" as well as the popular video "Buddy," while bringing back "The Thanksgiving Song" and showing the world "The Buffoon."
At the same time, Sandler's film career kicked into high gear, starting with a small cameos in Shakes the Clown and in Coneheads, followed by co-starring roles in Airheads and Mixed Nuts. Sandler's began his starring role in Universal's Billy Madison, a box office smash that he co-wrote. Next up in the film arena for Sandler was his second Universal comedy, Happy Gilmore. Soon after, he co-starred with Daymon Wayons in the action/comedy Bulletproof. The most recent Adam Sandler movie is The Wedding Singer. "The Wedding Singer" co-stars the lovely and talented Drew Barrymore, and stars Sandler as the ultimate master of ceremonies who guarantees all a good time... until he gets left at the altar of his own wedding. This transforms him into a newlyweds' worst nightmare -- an entertainer who can do nothing but destroy what is supposed to be the perfect day. Luckily Drew Barrymore is there to help put him back on track. The film is set in 1985 -- so there is plenty of teal and purple color schemes, big hair, and shoulder pads. "The Water Boy" was Adam's next movie, which was released in November, 1998.
With the release of What The Hell Happened To Me?, Adam introduces a host of more Sandler characters while continuing to maintain the element of complete, and completely hilarious, originality. Adam's latest CD is What's Your Name?, an all music album including "The Lonesome Kicker" and "The Goat Song."
Adam is currently in Florida shooting the next film, The Water Boy, a comedy about a retarded waterboy who is discovered by the team to possess a great hidden talent for football.
