TIPS AND TRICKS

HERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT MIGHT COME IN HANDY
CRANKBAITS
A tip that I got out of a book that works really well, plus it recycles some of your old lures. Take an old broken back Rapala or Rebel or what ever, they're the two piece ones. Cut off the rear part of the lure, making sure you leave the ring on the front part. Now add a split ring to the rear of the front part, then place a #1/0 or #2/0 worm hook on that. Now all you have to do is add your favorite twister tail type worm to that and your in business. The added action from the lip on the lure really gets the worm working. I have a couple that I took the front treble off and texas rig the worm to keep it weedless, works great in pads and grass.
If you want to increase the depth that a crank will run, take off the front treble hook and squeeze a split shot on the eye. DON'T use the ones with the horns on the bottom side that let you re-open the shot. They hang down to far below the lip and keep the lure from running true
JIGS
Ever been fishing with a buddy and you are both jigging. Same size jig, same pinheads or crawlers or twister tail. He's catching fish and your not. The only difference you can see is his jig is yellow and yours is white and neither one of you have anymore. Well, you just grab his pole, heave him over the side and take his jig.
No, don't do that. I found a quick fix for this color problem is nail polish. It's cheap, comes in more colors than Boy George will ever be able to try, drys fast and being acrylic is fairly chip resistent. I keep a few in my jig box all the time. They even come with glitter in them for added flash.
It works good for touch ups on plastic or wood crankbaits and spoons as well.
Plus if the wife has dinner plans for you, you can touch up you nails before you head in.
If you're a tube user, take a couple of those plastic bottles that camera film comes in and put some rock salt in one and a few cotton balls in the other.
When you're throwing a tube, stuff a few hunks of rock salt inside the tube, then put a piece of cotton ball in behind it. The salt gives off scent and taste, the cotton keeps it from falling out.
TROLLING
This is a trick I use if I'm flatline trolling or using a diver of somesort. For me, it works very well.
I installed 2 small eyehooks on the stern of my boat. I attach a downrigger line release to each of these. Here in PA. you are allowed to use 2 poles. When I get my lure out to where I want it, I put the line in the release, the rod in a holder and crank the pole down till I have a good bow to it, like in a downrigger. Now, instead of your line being 6' in the air, it's down about a foot off the water. This allows your lure to run a little deeper, keeps your lines separated better, and when you get a hit, the pole pops up just like in a rigger. Really scares the heck out of you when you start dozing off.
