William Crawford Whitmore
William was born Jan. 22, 1843. He served in Co H., 10th
Virginia Infantry, enlisted July 5, 1861, Harrisonburg. Marked absent
with typhoid fever on leave since Aug. 24, 1861. Promoted to 3rd Corp.
April 24, 1862. Furnished substitute May 31, 1862. He also served in 2nd
Co. E, 18th Virginia Cavalry. Enlisted Jan. 30 1864. "Present for
Sept. & Oct. 1864, dated October 30, 1864, Claimed $2,700.00 for a
Bay Horse killed in action near Strasburg, VA Sept. 21, 1864. Paroled on
Oath May 15, 1865 Staunton, VA, age 22". Light Complextion, Dark
Hair, Black Eyes, 5'4".
In 1869 William Crawford Whitmore married Rachel McCheaney Thompson of Brownburg, Rockbridge Co., VA . They had 11 children. "Later in life William Crawford Whitmore would share stories of the war with his grandchildren. The climax of his stories was when he would move the bullet that remained embedded in his hand." Of course, his grandchildren called him General Lee, when he came riding in on his gray horse. William Crawford Whitmore died at the home of his daughter, L. A Parr, Harrisonburg, VA on Oct. 25, 1929.
