1097th What's New What's New What's New

HOT HOT HOT 17 April 2009, I received an e-mail from Thom Kirkpatrick last week about there being a 1097th Reunion this coming October. After a few e-mails with John Crenshaw I have the basic details, 9-12 October 2009, Columbus Day Weekend in the Ft Eustis/Newport News area. I am planning on attending and would like to make a humble request, if anyone has any scanned copies of their pics from any era of the 1097th and would like to share them please give them to me and I will add them on the page. The longer I keep this page going them more I want it to by OUR page and not MY page. I will update with more details as I get them.

Something else that's been on my mind for a few years, contact information on the Raiders of the Past list. For a long time I have wanted to include contact information for those that wanted their contact information listed. Once down side to this is people who you don't want to have your contact information have a way to get it and pester you. The decision is 100% yours. If you want your e-mail or snail mail address listed under your profile in theRaiders of the Past let me know stating this and I will post as you desire. I would also like an updated profile if you so desire so I can also update this at the same time. It you want this please E-mail me.

February 12, 2008 - I had my left operated on, same type as my left, on Monday the 4th. I am gimping around the house here lately but I my leg is a lot stronger than last time however the pain is excruciating. I hope the pain subsides soon. On a more somber note my wife had a miscarriage in early December. We are waiting a few months before trying for another baby.

I will be retireing from the Army in August. Really my retirement date is Oct 31, 2008 but I sign out on Permissive TDY followed by transition leave then followed by my actual retirement. I will be starting a computer class on March 17th that will end on Sept 4th. This will allow me almost 2 months to look for a new job before my paycheck from active duty ends. With the help of the school's job placement counselor I will be putting my resume as soon as I get my first certification in June. Hopefully I can start a new job when the school ends in September while I am on transition leave so I can double dip paychecks.

I have been trying to lower my bills before retiring. $10 less per month to Cox since I am no longer renting a modem. $20 less for Verizon since I am using fewer minutes on the phone as my office has a phone and my wife has a job so neither of us talk as much on the phone. A dollar here a dollar there just to lower my monthly obligation for bills before I get out. I guess that is all.

26 October 2007, I had surgery on my right knee on the 24th and have been bedriden since then. The best news of all is my wife is pregnant. She did a home test Wednesday night, then again first thing Thursday morning. Now today she went to MacDonald Army Hospital for the official test all of which came back positive. We're both stoked for this and looking for a delivery date of the 29th of June +/-.

12 October 2007, If anyone has noticed that I have not been replying to e-mails that past few months it's because I have been so busy with work. That being said I am looking for someone motivated to help me with the site. You'll need a little basic html skill but honestly it's not very hard. If you are interested please E-MAIL me.

I just got a phone call from someone researching the unit history mostly after the move to Panama. Specifically the 80s and early 90s. If anyone has any information they want to share contact Sam Cooper. He's looking to have a draft turned in by late next week so don't delay. I will be in Yellowstone on a family vacation and I will not be back home until the 20th.

4 March 2007, I arrived back safe and sound from Guatemala. The mission was excellent if it could have only been a month or two longer. I had 200 pieces of mail when I got back and about a dozen was from former Raiders. As a result I have added 20 names to the raiders of the past list. Check the what's new link for the names added.

Request from Dave Boley, he's looking for former Raider Mark Farley. If anyone has contact information for him please let me know so I can forward it to Dave. I have one I have pieced together but I don't know if it's accurate. At least it has not bounced yet.

One more thing, your personal e-mail address, do you want it made public in the Raiders of the past list? I can provide a hyperlink from your name to click and shoot an e-mail to you. I can even include a subject of your choice. Drop me a line and let me know if you want this. I will only add those e-mail address for everyone who has given me a nod of approval. Drop me a line.

12 Jan 2007, I will be out of the net until late Feb or early March.

15 November 2006, Former Raider Eric Eggers is looking into getting the 1097th Ft Davis coins remade. Price is yet to be determined but if there is sufficient interest and the price is not too steep I will probably buy about 100 of them so I can sell them to interested people. If anyone is interested please drop me an e-mail. 4 March 2007, I will check with Eric Eggers about what he found out about getting coins made.

16 Sept 06, An unfortunate update for your River Raiders page:

Army Lt. Col. Marshall A. Gutierrez, 41, of New Mexico; assigned to the Area Support Group, Arijan, Kuwait; died Sep. 4 from non-combat related injuries in Camp Virginia, Kuwait. The incident is under investigation.

I just got the above in an e-mail this morning.

10 March 2006, I got this in an e-mail from a soldier formerly assigned to JOTB:

I came across this supplement to AR 600-8-22 (see attachment)
Joint Task Force SAFE HAVEN 26 Aug 94 - 3 Mar 95 Panama (See note 11.)
11. The award of the HSM is approved only for those service members contained in the by-name listing provided by the Joint Staff. A copy of the by-name listing has been forwarded to all MACOMS.

18 Feb 2006, GOOGLE EARTH! Definately a cool invention. Here's link to my stuff on Panama for Google Earth: HERE. The file will show up as a zip file asking if you want to save or just open. Pick one then open the file afterwards. If it does not work for whatever reason drop me an e-mail. For those of you who do not know what is Google Earth, it's a program made by Google that is shows the earth based off satalite pics. As cool as it would be the program is not live action and based on several landmarks I have seen the information is a couple years out of date but it is still really cool. The detail of some places is good enough to read the paper of the person you see, other places the detail is not that great. Overall the program is great. There's a whole internet forum about Google Earth. The membership of that forum has gone to over 100k members in a few months. Hope you check it out.

9 Nov 05, I received an e-mail from Raider of the Past Jose Gomez who served during the early to mid 90s. He was asking about a Humanitarian award the unit received during Safe Haven in 94 and 95. I have heard through the grapevine that anyone who served in the company during that time was authorized to wear that award but I have seen absolutely no documentation regarding the award. I know of a few people who have the award annotated on their personnel files but I have no written documentation to support the award. I am not trying to get their award taken away but hoping that whoever has the award can point those of us eligible to wear the award what route to take to get it documented in our records. Anyone with information please mail me.

17 July 2005, After having to delete the new stuff one too many times I decided to make a link of "What's New" so everyone can see for themselves. I will break it down by date or at least the entries will be spaced by date. Enjoy

5 Jan 2006, I updated the bio of Steven Studer.

13 November 2005, I updated the Bio on David Guccione and Don Walters. 9 Nov 05, I received an e-mail from Raider of the Past Jose Gomez who served during the early to mid 90s. 15 October 2005, I am officially off the market. Libidia and I tied the knot in a small outside ceremony. Here's a pic right after the ceremony. Click here.

28 September 2005, Libidia finally arrived in the US on 15 August 2005, yeah a full year later than I wanted but it finally happened. We have discussed it in detail and have decided to tie the knot on 15 October 2005. We are planning a small informal ceremony on the James River with a small reception at our house afterwards. I will post pics of the ceremony after we tie the knot, probably Sunday the 16th in the evening.

17 July 2005, I added Russ Abbott to the Raiders list.

21 June 2005, I added a bio on Doug Rogenbock (spelling). I have known Doug for a few years and a few months ago he let me know I had missed his name on the list. Actually I think I had it there at one point in time but the information was accidentally deleted or something. I also added to the bio of Rob Richter who's information was also lost. I added a completely new name, Chuck West who shot me an e-mail yesterday. I also added a bio on Scott Gross from an entry in the guestbook. Either my spamfilter was blocking his e-mails, I accidentally deleted them or I forgot to add him and deleted them, in any case I am sorry for your stuff not getting added. You're good to go now. Also, I added to Fred Kersiek's bio from his guestbook entry.

Please, the Raiders of the past list is nowhere near complete and the original file was corrupted. If there is anything missing on your bio or someone else's please drop me an e-mail and I will work on fixing it. If I don't get back with you be persistant, I am one of the great procrastinators of the world and I forget to do things from time to time, well most of the time.

Ok, its time to beg former raiders for their help. I have completely used all of my pictures for the site. While there might be some more onesy twosys out there it is doubtful I can add any more of my pics. With this being said I will probably get tired of having a site I do nothing with and get rid of it at a later date not necessarily soon but within a few years. So here's where you salty sailors can help out I need pics of the 1097th. I need stories about missions, experiences and memories. I imagine I can still tell a story or two but that will eventually run out and we'll be back to where we are now. I guess what I am saying, if you former raiders want to keep the site going I need help with more pics, stories, etc. Please e-mail me if you are interested in helping. Thanks.

If anyone has a better pic of the 1097th logo seen above please e-mail it to me. That one was a scan, actually several, taken off an old 1097th t-shirt I have. There are visible cracks in the print so I am looking for a better version. Hey old timers, I'd love to add your stuff as well so please send it to me. E-mail is fine or if you choose snail mail, I can deal with that too. I will start tracking down some of you former Raiders out there so that I can steal your pictures and add them to the page. Look out, I'm coming! 26 October 2007, I had surgery on my right knee on the 24th and have been bedriden since then. The best news of all is my wife is pregnant.
