ROBERT HIGHLAND IN BOOT CAMP. (CHOSINE25)
Bob Highland enlisted in the Marine Corp in New York on Feb 25, 1950 at the age of 17 and reported for boot camp, Paris Island, SC. He then underwent Basic Training, NC. He then was assigned to the First Provisional Marine Brigade at Camp Pendleton, CA. He arrived in Pusan, Korea, August 2, 1950, with Easy Company, 2nd Batt. 5th Marine Regiment as a Rifleman. Now he was only 18 years old and engaged the enemy on August 7th, 17th, Sept. 3rd in major actions, two of which were the Naktong Bulge at the Naktong River. He then was shipped out of Pusan aboard ships to meet the lst Marine Division for the landing at Inchon. He and his division went on to take Kimpo Airfield, Seoul and on north to the Chosine Reservoir.
During the breakout of his outfit to Hagaru, Bob was part of a fire team sent up on the ridge to take out a 120 MM Chinese Mortar. They took it out. Bob was wounded, seriously wounded, on December 2nd, and for two days layed in the back of a truck, and then further sustained frostbite. He was evacuated by a C-47 out of
Hagaru-ri on Dec 4th and sent to a hospital in Japan, then back to the States. He receives a 60% disability.
Bob Highland received the following medals:

National Defence
Korean Service with three campaign stars
United Nations and three Korean Presidential Unit Citations.
