January 14, 2002

Dear Parents:

Our first home meet went very well and once again the attendance was fantastic. It is extremely helpful to have everybody there on time so we can get started and finished on time. Special thanks to all who helped out with the mats, scorer's tables, snack stand and clean up. For those of you who did not get involved, we know who you are, please step up and ask how you can help. We are all a part of this organization and can never have too much participation from parents.

Dual Meets-This week's meet is away at Great Valley High School. Directions are listed below. We need everybody to arrive at 8:15 a.m. Please let the coaches know if you will not be attending.

Tournaments - This past Sunday we had 45 wrestlers compete in the Aston Tournament. Tournaments provide the best and fastest way to improve as a wrestler. As a team, we would like to congratulate all that participated and also recognize the support of the parents who stay around to watch other team members wrestle after their son has been eliminated. Special recognition goes to:

January 7, 2002

Dear Parents:

We would like to start off thanking everybody for the turnout on Saturday against North Penn. With approximately 80 kids we only had 2 no-shows. As reminder to the few who did not show or call, it is extremely important that you call if you can not make it. By not calling ahead of time your potential opponent was cheated out of a match.

Dual Meets –This week’s meet is home against BYC. Our home meets are held at Drexel Hill Middle School. We need everybody there at 8:00 a.m. so we can get started on time. We also need help setting up, working the snack stand, keeping score, and cleaning up. It is required that everybody participates in some way. Again, let us know if you are unable to help. As with all dual meets, it is vital that you:

LET US KNOW IF YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT. Since your child will be scheduled to wrestle two bouts, if you do not show up their opponent will be cheated out of one of his matches. The sooner we know, the easier the adjustments will be.

BE ON TIME. We are all aware of the difficulties of getting out of the house with young children. However, if we do not see your child at roll call, we will assume they are not coming, and begin to reschedule their bouts. If you are going to be late, please call Jim Knapp on his cell phone (610) 745-8291, on Saturday morning. Prior to Saturday morning, call (610) 924-9650 or let the coaches know at practice.

STAY UNTIL THE END. Many times during these meets we will be able to set up additional bouts to help your child gain experience. We are aware there will be times when you have other commitments, so let us know when you are leaving. Also, during home meets, there is a significant amount of clean up work that needs to be done. Which leads us to…

Participation- The foundation of the success of the Raiders Wrestling program is the participation of the parents. There is a significant amount of work which goes in to making these meets possible. We need your help. We are responsible for setting up the mats, working the snack bar, working the scorer’s table, rolling up the mats, sweeping up, and getting the gym back in the condition we received it. This requires a complete team effort. Jump in. For those who do not know what to do, simply ask, but please, get involved.

Behavior- I am sure many of you have read and seen about examples of parental misbehavior during children’s sporting events. Particularly in wrestling where our children are out on the mat by themselves, without any teammates, tensions run high. The referees during these matches have a primary responsibility to protect the safety of each wrestler. Let them do their job. Our League is having a difficult time finding referees because of the abuse they receive. The Drexel Hill Raiders are considered throughout the league to consistently display proper behavior. We are sure this will continue. Unsportsmanlike behavior will not be tolerated by our wrestlers, or their parents. Display of this behavior will result in removal from the facility, and repeated occurrences will result in removal from the team.

Strength training for young athletes

Should Your Young Athlete Train with Weights?

When deciding whether your young athlete should be involved in a weight training program it is important to know both the potential benefits and limitations of such a decision. Some of the benefits include the following:

· Increase in muscular strength – There is a lot of research evidence that shows that kids get stronger when they weight train using correct and safe procedures. This is true even for kids who haven’t started puberty.

· Injury prevention – It has been demonstrated with high school-aged athletes that weight training reduces the rate of sport-related injuries.

· Improved sport performance - Weight training has been demonstrated to help adolescent athletes perform better in sport skills that incorporate throwing and jumping.

· Enhance self-esteem – The positive outcomes that can occur from weight training can significantly improve a young person’s self-perception.

Some concerns that your young athlete may face include:

· Safety – Weight training can be very safe when it is performed under the supervision of a qualified instructor who is knowledgeable about the growing bodies of young athletes. If exercises are performed incorrectly there is the potential for overuse injuries and damage to the growth plates of growing bones.

· Equipment size – To perform exercises correctly the weight training equipment needs to be adjustable to fit the smaller bodies of young athletes. If the equipment does not adjust to fit your athlete the risk of injury increases.

· Time – Weight training is a commitment in both effort and time. For many kids scheduling a consistent weight training program in a calendar that includes school, homework, sports, etc. can be a difficult thing to accomplish.

Determining whether your young athlete should begin a weight training program requires careful evaluation of his or her individual circumstances. Hopefully the factors discussed above will assist you and your athlete in making a more informed decision regarding participating in weight training.

Another exciting year is about to begin for this upcoming year.  Here are some details for all interested wrestlers:

Subject:   Greetings from Russsia

Dear DH Raiders,

Greetings from Moscow, Russia.  I wrestled for Drexel Hill Jr. High 1962-1965.  Bob Long was the coach at DH in those days.  We won over 50 straight matches before he left DH and went to West Chester State College to coach.  He recruited me to 28 years of competition that included
wrestling in 3 international styles-FS-GR and Sombo ( a russian style similar to judo).  My strong fundation at DHJHS and UDHS were Art McCall and Ken Barr coached me gave me the opportunity to see much success on the mats in the future.  I now live in Russia and work with the
Christian Sports Organization Athletes In Action.  I work with Russian and USA wrestlers-I've worked for the Atlanta and Sydney Olympic Organizing Committees in wrestling, as well as other sports.

I encourage your wrestlers to train hard and build a strong foundation of technique and strength training.  Thanks to the coaches and administrators and volunteers who keep the club functioning.  I wish you all the best.  I wish there had been a club program when I was in junior and senior high.

In God's grip,

Carl Dambman
