One of the most confusing DVD topics is the variety of cases. When the format was launched, it was decided that DVDs should not use standard CD jewel cases. This was to serve two purposes-- first, it prevented people from mistaking DVDs for CDs and second, it allowed DVDs to be shelved alongside VHS.

A lot of different cases were developed. The types are roughly divided between several types of Keep Case, Snapper, and the Super Jewel. Keep Cases are by far the most popular, though discussions continue as to which is easiest to use. Snappers are highly unpopular, yet there are a few fans who enjoy them. Super Jewels are even less popular than Snappers, but still have a following.
