NLCS 1971

For the first time, an LCS went more than the minimum three games, as Pittsburgh rebounded from a loss in the opener to take the next three from San Francisco.

The Pirates scored first, with two runs in the third inning of Game One, but the Giants came back with a run in the bottom of the inning and put the game away in the fifth as Tito Fuentes and Willie McCovey both hit two-out two-run homers. Pirate first baseman Bob Robertson avenged his clubs opening-game defeat the next day, battering four of the Giant's six pitchers for three home runs and a double- and five RBIs- in the Pirates' 9-5 win. Robertson continued his assault in Game Three, homering off Jaun Marichal in the second. The Giants came back with a run in the sixth, but third baseman Richie Hebner put the game away with a second Pirate home run off Marichal in the eighth.

Both clubs scored five times in the first two innings of Game Four. But Pirate relievers Bruce Kison and Dave Gusti then pinned the Giants down for the final seven innings, while Roberto Clemente and Al Oliver combined for four RBIs in the sixth to capture the flag.
Pitcher Steve Blass was rocked during the NLCS allowing 9 earned runs on 14 hits including 4 home runs in 7 innings for an ERA of 11.57. Making his performance in the World Series even more spectacular.
