If there is a problem with turkey hunting in Pike County, it may be that there are too many wild turkeys to be hunted.

Pike County is booming with wild turkeys!  The large recreational subdivisions provide security to turkeys looking to avoid coyotes during the nesting season.  Turkey's entering these areas do not risk hunters and are rewarded with an environment that has plenty of natural and man produced food.  Although few turkeys live exclusively in these subdivisions, the subdivisions' impact have helped in producing the present turkey boom.  Joint ventures involving the Game Commission, Bureau of Forestry, and the Lake Region Long Beards Chapter of the NWTF, have helped produce great habitat areas in all of Pike's gamelands and state forests.

Therein lies the problem.  While wild turkeys may be hunted just about anywhere.  Their sheer numbers handicap the hunter.  Even a skilled caller may find it difficult, at times, to compete with all the natural competitors.

Visitors to the area should consider hunting in the Delaware State Forest.  There are plenty of parking areas and easy access trails along PA - 402.  Hike in until you find a good spot.

All of the state gamelands as well as the DWG-NRA also provide good hunting opportunities.

Be careful, and be sure to keep it safe.  Wear orange to, and from, your hunting site.  Do not stalk the bird you are calling.  And, always positively identify your target before shooting!
