What is NIAD?

NIAD stand for National Iguana Awareness Day. A group of members that consist of iguana owners that have met via the internet, with later members joining because they saw our web page. We are trying to educate the public about the proper care of iguanas, and making the public aware of the neglect and abuse that iguanas go through so that the abuse and neglect will stop.

On Sept. 9, 2000, our hope is that each member of NIAD, herptological societies, zoos, veterinarians, and some pet shops will in some way educate the public about iguanas.

Why is NIAD needed?

NIAD is needed because today there are millions of pet shops that sell iguanas either very cheap or give them away when you purchase a set up from them. Today iguanas are sometimes referred to as the "disposable" pet. Many iguanas that are sold do not even get to reach their 1st birthday. Why you ask? Because of the false information that many pet shops give to their customers about the proper care of the iguanas. Many people are still under the understanding that iguanas only eat lettuce and some fruit, or that they eat mice, dog food, cat food, crickets, worms etc. This is completely false. Also, the pet shops tell their customers that you only need a 10 gallon tank to keep them in. False again. Or that they do not need any "special" lighting or heating. Again False. Iguanas have very specific needs that must be met for their over all health and well being. This is why NIAD is needed. It is needed to put a stop to all of the iguana abuse and neglect as well as all the untrue information about iguana care.

How can I help?

You can help by joining NIAD through the link at the top of this page. I am a volunteer of NIAD, in the state of Pennsylvania. You can do as much as you can do to help spread the word about NIAD and what it is that we do. You can also tell others about this and encourage them to join NIAD.

Our purpose is simple. Our message is simple. That Iguanas are easy to love, but HARD to care for. For more information about NIAD and iguana care information, please click on the NIAD link at the top of this page.
