ML Game 32
Gardner Fox 1
DEFENSE. DEFENSE. DEFENSE. This game shows again that lots of runs are not required to have an exciting game. On this day the recipe for good baseball was a base of “solid pitching”, 3 cups of “making routine defensive plays” and a pinch of defensive greatness. Let me explain.
Moppert stuck quickly by scoring 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning on a walk and a couple of hits by Shawn Quinn and Pete Mamola. Not another run was scored until the 5th when GF pushed a run across. In between however there were many solid defensive putouts. While none were noteworthy on their own I would just say that multiple putouts where recorded by Mike Roberts, Will Manganiello, Kevin Dougherty, Sean Heidig (3 in one inning) and Phillip Kotcamp. David Splain was also huge behind the plate for Moppert allowing just one past ball. The dash of defensive greatness occurred in the bottom of the 5th inning with GF batting, down 2 runs, bases loaded, 2 outs and Brian Mizell at bat. With a count full Bryan launched a shot to deep left center field when out of nowhere Ian Campbell made a running catch in the gap to end the inning.
Also of note were the pitching performances. In a losing effort Kevin McGarvey pitched 5 solid innings only allowing 3 hits. Moppert’s pitching effort was more by committee with Timmy Quinn going 3.2 innings (and getting the win), Kevin Dougherty going 1 inning and Will Manganiello going the final 1.2 innings.
