ML Game 2

Hagan 6

Gardner/Fox 5

Haganís Squeaks By Gardner-Fox In Season Opener

Haganís Funeral Home edged Gardner-Fox 6 Ė 5 Tuesday night in the Media Little League season opener for the two evenly-matched teams.  The game was dominated on both sides by outstanding starting pitching and timely home runs.

Kevin McGarvey got the opening-day start for the visiting G-F.  He went four strong innings, surrendering just one run while tallying 8 strikeouts.  McGarvey and Eric McGough led the G-F offense, with both players going 2 for 3 with a double.

Hunter Tierney started for Haganís, going 5 equally strong innings before being shelved by this yearís new pitch count rule.  Tierney spread 4 runs over 5 innings while striking out 12.

G-F carried a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the 5th inning when the Haganís offense finally came alive.  Haganís sent 9 batters to the plate in the inning which was dominated by Hunter Tierneyís 3-run blast over the right-center field fence.  When the inning finally ended, Haganís carried a tenuous 5-4 lead into the 6th.  Just how tenuous became quickly evident when Major League rookie Brett Noble led off the top of the 6th and tied the score with a towering home run shot of his own.  John Owens, who came on to pitch the 6th inning in relief of Tierney, settled in after that, striking out the next three batters in order.  With the game tied at 5, the top of the Haganís batting order went to work in the bottom of the 6th.  Brian Gross (3 for 3, double, 2 singles, walk) led off by drawing a walk on 4 pitches.  Connor Martin advanced him to second base with his second perfectly-executed sacrifice bunt of the night.  G-F then pitched around Tierney (2 for 3, HR, double) and Owens (1 for 1, 3 walks) to load the bases.  With Kyle Tommasino at the plate for Haganís, a wild pitch sent Gross racing for home to score the winning run in a bang-bang play at the plate.
