Joe Rodger's Webfolio

In the required course of English 15 at Penn State, I was able to write about some interesting topics. On most of the I had to write, I had free range on where and who the papers were going to be focused towards. Some of the topics we had to write about were: key terms used in a hobby, sport, or profession; a review of a website that I was interested in; and collaborative paper written with in my grammar group on internet censorship; and a research paper with a topic of my choice. At the end of the semester we had to publish our three best papers on the internet in a sort of electronic portfolio, called a webfolio and here is mine.

The paper that was easiest to write was on comicbook jargon one of my favorite hobbies. In the last six years I have become a comicbook junkie. Since then I have begun to seriously collect and have even started to work for local dealers. I have also taken an interest in older books from the 1960's. When collecting books from that time period the condition of the book becomes very important. In writing it I surprised myself with the way I could describe the imperfections and the grades of comicbooks. I found myself having to try and condense all the material I wanted to explain due to the length the paper grew to while I was typing. The final draft of the paper gives a complete overview of grading comicbooks and also is helpful for those without too much experience in the comicbook world.

One of my other papers I liked a lot was on the Arizona Diamondbacks Home page. The Diamondbacks are a new expansion team joining Major League Baseball in the National League in the 1998 season. This site was still fairly new on the www when I examined it, but it had an extreme amount of information about the Diamondbacks and their minor league teams. It is very user-friendly, semi-interactive, and extremely informative.

Although it was tough to decipher through all the rumors and crime in the Dallas Cowboys Organization I wrote a paper that analyses the duo of Barry Switzer and Jerry Jones and the way they are running the once highly respected, Dallas Cowboys. This paper tells of the drugs, scandals, hookers, alcohol, and crime that has rocked the Dallas Cowboys ever since the extremely tolerant Barry Switzer has taken the reigns as head coach. Some of the information came from books written by Cowboy insider Skip Bayless. I have suffered all the hours of sorting through all the fog around the team and have developed an enjoyable paper that any Cowboy hater would love and any Cowboy fan would become sick over.

In English 15, I was not confined by limitations or multiple restrictions. The teacher, Claudine Keenan, allowed me to express myself, my interests, and even the person I want to be. The papers themselves were fun to write at times, while other times I rushed just to meet the 5 'O clock deadline. Also without trying to, I learned how to correct some of my grammar problems in my papers by revising them after Claudine gave her comments. Overall the class was a worthy experience.
