Between 6th and 7th grade my brother committed suicide. I was a hard time for the family, but I think that was the event that erased most of the nastiness out of me. Afterwards I was a little more focused on my life and generally more caring towards others. It was around this time that I also picked up trumpet and french horn. I also began to write poetry in this time. I can't find any of the old poems however.
In high school I began to take more difficult classes: latin, algebra's trig and calc, advanced biology, and honors english. It must have been these difficult classes that shaped my life. In tenth grade I picked up saxophone and also got a job as a clerk in a grocery store.
I would have to say that my senior year in high school was the best time of my life. In the summer between my junior and senior years of hs I took college classes in lit composition. That was when my poetry finally began to take on a life of it's own and I've been improving on it ever since. In Oct97 I joined the US army. That next spring I went to districts on sax. I basically partied as much as I could that year because I knew that the following summer I would be leaving for the army.
Basic training was much easier than I had imagined it would be; my difficulties with the army would not start until i arrived at the army school of music in Virginia. You see, to join the army band one has to audition first. I passed my audition as a civilian, but I was unprepared for the standards of the school. I played only classical before the army and only knew how to read written notes. However, the army requires me to read primarily chord symbols and play jazz/latin music. I failed my first and second auditions at the school until finally I passed my third one. I barely passed all auditions after that. In March99 I was demoted to pv2 for smoking in an AIT environment. However, I didnt let this stop me from focusing on my music and passing my final audition a month later. I went home to Pa for two weeks and then left for Bamberg, Germany. Unfortunately, 2 weeks after I arrived in Germany I had to go back home because my sister died in a car accident. That left me an only child. Anyways, since then I've been playing piano for the army and making a little money on the side playing for the post theatre.
