I wanted a Triumph TR6 when I first sat in one when I was 16. Twenty-five (25) years later I got my wish when I bought a to be restored 1971 TR6 from an acquaintance less than 2 miles from my home. In December 1998 my 12 year old son, Phil, and I began our adventure. At left, Phil is pictured with our car on the lift as he begins the extraction of the worn out interior. Although the car has only 42,000 miles, it had a good amount of body rust that was cut out and replaced. Since the rust was limited to the exterior we began an on frame restoration. After a few weeks of rust removal and welding we towed the car to our home one evening (no brakes!!). On the right is a picture of Phil "driving" while the prior owner and I (the guy with the blue jacket) push the car into its new home.
To the left is a picture that shows the significant amount of welding that was done to "close the holes". This work was followed by grinding out every piece of rust we could find. Then we started on the fiberglass and bondo work.
Meanwhile, Phil continued his work in removing everything but the steering column and dash in the interior (picture at right). The work continued and we finally sent the car to a local body and paint shop for a new coat of "damson". The pictures below were taken after reinstalling bumpers and light fixtures for the Pennsylvania Classic Car registration. Now all we have to do is get the rest of the interior back in place and get the lights, horn, wipers, all that Lucas stuff to work.
March, 2000
The interior restoration has been completed. A beautiful new top with reflective striping has been added. We have received our Classic plates. The engine turned over March 10th! I have 1 of the 2 horns working. All lights work except for the turn signals. Can't seem to get the clutch bled. Our goal is to reach inspection in April and on the road ofr British Car Week the end of May.
