The following is from an unknown writer with an unknown date. " Christian Binkley (1737-1805) Born in Lancaster County, Pa. He married Elizabeth Shulmacker and they lived in a two story stone house near Eden, northeast of Lancaster on the Conestoga Creek. Here he built, around 1779*, a grist and saw mill and in 1789 the famous Binkley's Bridge. The mill was three and a half stores high and measured thirty by sixty feet. It is said he was wealthy. He is listed in the records as having boarded horses, along with other Lancaster citizens, in compliance with an Army order of 1 August, 1780 which stated 'the county was to furnish 1,200 barrels of flour monthly, 5,00 bushels of forage, 50 wagons, 400 horses and 600 men' (Henry Landis, husband of Esther Binkley, 1797-1881, and Peter Grebill also contributed horses). Christian died 10 MAY 1805 and is buried in the Landis Valley Cemetery, Manheim Township, Lancaster Co., PA. On his tombstone is carved "Memory of Christian Binkley who departed this life May 10, 1805 aged 67 years and 2 months. He was the founder of the bridge across the Conestoga."
BINKLEY'S BRIDGE- WRITEN BY AN UNKNOWN WRITER. This name, formerly borne by a small settlement and a post office on the Conestoga River, in the eastern part of Manheim Township, on the New Holland Pike, had its origin in the building of a bridge over the creek at that locality by Christian Binkley (sometimes spelled Binckley). This was said to be, and undoubtedly was, the first stone bridge in the county. It was built prior to the construction of Witmer's bridge, which was in 1798, and as nearly as can be ascertained in 1789. Christian Binkley was one of early settlers, holding.
