The fate of the German Princess Elisabeth of Hesse-Darmstadt (1864-1918) is one of tragedy, while her marriage in 1884 to the Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, brother of Tsar Alexander III, was one of the happiest periods of her life.
Educated to provide relief to the sick and afflicted, it seemed only natural that she work to alleviate the suffering of the Russian people of whom she so loved. At the same time, her spiritual journey led her to renounce Protestantism and to adopt the Orthodox faith.
After the assassination of her husband in 1905, she retired from the world to devote himself to God and the suffering of the poor. In 1909, she founded in Moscow, the Convent of Saints Martha and Mary. Arrested by the Bolsheviks, she was savagely murdered in July 1918, along with several other members of the imperial family. Known as "new Russian martyrdom" by the Orthodox Church, she was invoked by the name of St. Elizabeth of Russia.
After the fall of communism, the Convent of Saints Martha and Mary reopened its doors to the disadvantaged. Today, fraternities are born under her patronage in the parishes and carry on the work of their founder. This book offers a selection of letters from the Grand Duchess to her nephew and brother-in-the Tsar Nicolas II, various testimonies of his contemporaries and the statutes of the House of Mercy.
The introduction summarizes the itinerary of this exceptional woman little known in Western Christianity, although her statue has adorned one of the walls of Westminster Abbey in London, England since 1998, along with those of other Christian martyrs of the twentieth century.
