Gleb Botkin was born in Finland in 1900. He was the youngest son of Dr. Eugene Botkin, who, in 1908, was appointed personal physician to the Russian Emperor, Nicholas II. During the ten years that followed, Dr. Botkin lived under the white light which beat about the throne of the Czar of all the Russias, at Tsarskoe Selo; witnessed the stormy scenes of the Revolution, and shared with his father and the ill-fated Romanovs the darkening days of Siberian exile, which terminated at Ekaterinburg, 17 July, 1918, amid a scene of blood and horror, in which the Czar, his immediate family and attendants, and Dr. Botkin perished. Escaping from Soviet Russia by way of Japan, Gleb Botkin came to America in 1922, where he lived until his death in 1969.
The Real Romanovs is a highly favorable portrayal of Nicholas II and his relationship with his family, and a detailed discussion of the arrest, incarceration, and execution of the Romanovs. The author also gives special attention to the theory that Grand Duchess Anastasia was not among the members of the Imperial Family who were murdered at Ekaterinburg in 1918.
