The extended Royal Family of the 20th century owes its origin to Queen Victoria who declared that the children of her daughters, those of her granddaughter, Victoria, and the children and grandchildren of her cousin, Princess Mary Adelaide, would be members of the “Official” Royal Family. In 1917 King George V decided that all those of his family holding foreign styles and titles were to adopt British ones. There emerged two branches of Mountbatten (Battenberg): the Carisbrookes and the Milford Havens. The Tecks became Cambridges and Athlones while the two daughters of Princess Helena simply dropped the territorial designation of Schleswig-Holstein, becoming princesses of “nowhere”. There are also collateral branches, e.g. the Fifes, the Connaughts and the Harewoods, that may be considered members of the extended Royal Family.
The junior members of the Royal Family are not nowadays experienced to carry out official engagements or take on patronages. This was not always so as many photographs will show. The lesser known Royals took an active role supporting charities and numerous good causes. They put in many hours of unpaid work, which often went unrecognized by the public and they were always on parade at official and family occasions; The Birthday Parade, Garden Parties, State Visits, Ascot, The Derby and events too numerous to mention, where they added a colourful, dignified and sometimes eccentric presence. The photographs in this collection aim at capturing the spirit of those days, and breathe some life into these now almost forgotten figures.
