BOOK DESCRIPTION

Over 150 Black & White Photographs!

Since 1827, the Court Circular--the formal list recording the official engagements carried out by members of the Royal Family--has been published in The Times and in the Daily Telegraph. During the reign of Queen Victoria it also recorded snippets of her private life, faithfully documenting the visits of her many descendants, both British and foreign. The Queen often drafted the wording herself in order to give prominence to events which she felt should enjoy a wide circulation. She would also use its columns to promote her own views, and phrases such as ‘my pleasure’ or ‘great regret’ frequently describe her reaction to events of the day.

Up until the death of King George V in 1936 the private comings and goings of the monarch’s family were given equal importance alongside the official, often mundane, duties. It was with great regularity that one could read during the 1920s and ‘30s entries such as ‘Princess Victoria, the Duke of Connaught, Lady Patricia Ramsey, Princess Helena Victoria, Princess Marie Louise and the Marquess and Marchioness of Cambridge visited Their Majesties today and remained to luncheon [or tea]’. The recording of these family gatherings gives one an insight into the closeness of the monarch and the extended family, providing invaluable material for historians and social chroniclers.

Many of the people who appear in the pages of this book have featured from time to time in the Court Circular. One would probably not be able to make such a claim when recording later periods of royal life. Unique pictures of the Connaughts, the Mountbattens, the Athlones, the Cambridges and the FitzGeorges as well as the Hesses, the Hohenlohe-Langenburgs, the Prussians and the Coburgs. Many “bejewelled and begowned” portraits as well as more informal ones. Informed and entertaining captions.
