Created in 2002 to celebrate etching 63 culinary herb plates since 1994, all the plates are printed here together.   The border is made up of nature prints of the herbs represented in the etchings, in the same color as its etching and situated as close to the corresponding plate as I could place it.

The colors represent families of herbs. Gold is the Liliaceae Family (garlic chives, chives, garlic, leek, onion, shallots and scallions), and the Zingiberaceae Family (cardamom, galangal, ginger and turmeric).   Blue is the Labiatae Family (basil, lavender, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, savory, spearmint, sage and thyme).

Brown represents the Umbelliferae Family (anise, caraway, chervil, coriander, cumin, dill, fennel, curley parsley and flat parsley).   Purple denotes the Compositae Family (tarragon and chrysanthemum); Lauraceae (bay and cinnamon); Myrtaceae (allspice and cloves); Myristiceae (mace and nutmeg); and the Polygonaceae Family (rau ram and sorrel).

Red covers the Cruciferae Family (horseradish, mustard and watercress); Solanaceae (chili pepper and paprika); Leguminosae (clover, fenugreek and tamarind); and Rutaceae (fagara, kifer lime and sansho).   Green signifies the Apiaceae Family (mitsuba); Bixacae (annatto); Chenopodium (epazote); Cupressaceae (juniper); Ericaceae (heather); Gramineae (lemon grass); Illiciaceae (star anise); Iridaceae (saffron); Lamiaceae (perilla); Orchidaceae (vanilla); Papaveraceae (poppy); Pedaliaceae (sesame) and Piperaceae (pepper).

AmericanHerbQ3D - Original Print
This quilt represents 24 herbs used quite often in preparing American dishes.   The border is made up of nature prints of the herbs represented in the center.   The pattern in the center is composed of etchings alternated with an individual nature print of that herb in the same color.   My attempt is to produce a pleasing pattern of colored rectangles alternated with textures similar to what one might find in a hand sewn quilt.   You will find the quilt itself is a recurring theme in my work.   I have produced other quilt images using etching, embossing, sewn paper, monotype and nature prints in various combinations.

The 3 colors represent different families of herbs.   Blue is the Labiatae Family (basil, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, thyme, spearmint and sage) and the Compositae Family (tarragon).   Yellow is the Umbelliferae Family (caraway, chervil, coriander, cumin, dill, fennel, flat and curly parsley).   Red covers all the other Families:   Cruciferae (horseradish and mustard), Lauraceae (bay), Solanaceae (chili pepper), Zingiberaceae (ginger), and Liliaceae (Chives, Garlic Chives, Garlic and Scallions).

So named to celebrate my original 30 individual herb plates etched in 1994, I even have the first plate "dancing" in merriment (You'll have to look closely).   The border is made up of nature prints of the herbs represented in the etchings.   You will find the quilt itself is a recurring theme in my work.   I have produced other quilt images using etching, embossing, sewn paper, monotype and nature prints in various combinations.

The colors represent families of herbs.   Yellow is the Liliaceae Family (chives, garlic chives, garlic, shallots and scallions).   Blue is the Labiatae Family (basil, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, savory, spearmint, sage and thyme).   Green is the Umbelliferae Family (anise, caraway, chervil, coriander, cumin, dill, fennel, and parsley).   Red covers all the other Families:   Compositae (tarragon); Cruciferae (horseradish and mustard); Lauraceae (bay); Solanacea (chili pepper); Zingiberaceae (ginger); Polygonaceae (sorrel); Chenopodium (epazote); and Cupressaceae (Juniper).

QAfrican Original Print - Kenya Cloth

This is a quilt, modeled after the familiar "Kenya Cloth," of the herbs the countries of the sub-Saharan regions use frequently in their cooking--Allspice, Basil, Cardamom, Chili Pepper, Cinnamon, Coriander/Cilantra, Cloves, Fenugreek, Garlic, Ginger, Nutmeg, Paprika, Parsley, Pepper, Tamarind, Turmeric and Vanilla.

European colonization by the Portuguese, Dutch, British and French had an influence as new foods and herbs were introduced. African countries also use in their cooking Bay leaf, Cumin, Fennel, Green Pepper, Onion, Saffron, Scallions, Spearmint, Tamarind, Thyme and Watercress.   You will find the quilt itself is a recurring theme in my work.   I have produced other quilt images using etching, embossing, sewn paper, monotype and nature prints in various combinations.

This is an etching of my Great Great Grandmother's Quilt. The actual quilt hangs today in my dining room and is approximately 6½ ft tall by 6 ft wide.   She and her husband owned a haberdashery on Grant Street in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where the William Penn Hotel stands today, during the late 1800's. The Victorian Crazy Quilt was made from the scraps of the dresses and suits they made for their customers.

I print this image with black ink on off-white paper and then stand in front of the Quilt and slowly copy all the colors in watercolor. I can only work for an hour at a time before this crazy quilt drives my eyes crazy searching out particular colors to paint. After I complete the painting, I use color pencils to duplicate the colored stiches that outline each piece in the quilt. While I am producing only a limited run of 25 finished pieces, the first 12 have gone to my 11 brothers and sisters and myself. With what has already sold I have only 2 left.

If it's SOLD: If one of my original prints has already sold, I can produce a new print using a similar layout and color scheme, but the nature prints will, by definition, still be unique.   Email me for details.
