BELAWAN -SUMATRA :
after the long stretch across
the Indian Ocean...
everyone was relieved when we entered the first Indonesian port for a 4-day "break":
hurrah, shore leave!
Bad luck, Sumatra did not recognize Indonesian visa and we were only allowed to walk along the docks.
I was a special case having been denied entrance for life but I ran into old KIM mate Lt. Urip Santoso who outranked the Customs and Immigration and took me along to MEDAN!
(The next time we met was in 2000!)

The next port was Singapore
where Rudi, Jan and I disembarked

We were cordially received by Wim van Zijl who took us to the Singapore Swimming Club and the Nationale Handelsbank Mess; Rudi stayed here ...

Jan and I flew on to Bangkok

on October 20, 1954
