"Can I have your attention please?"
The voice of a female could be mildly heard above the crowd. Slowly, the array of voices started to subside.
"Thank you" the female started to speak. "I want to introduce myself". "My name is Fatima, and my job here is to get everybody acquainted with how we do things around here." "I am of course, the band's choreographer, and I am the one who decides who stays, and who goes." "If you pay attention, and listen to me you will have a better chance." "Please leave your attitudes at the door, and we will get along fine."
Lacey made her way into the door, and found there had been many more people than she had expected. She slowly made her way to the back of the room, and found the table where she checked in.
"And your name is?" Lacey turned around, and noticed that Fatima had been talking to her.
"Lacey, Lacey Chamberlain" she said.
Fatima looked at her as if she knew her.
"New York girl?" Fatima asked her.
"Philly actually" Lacey responded. "But schooled in the apple".
"Well Philly girl, here we do things a bit different, and being late is not one of them" "So I suggest you get up here, and start learning these moves if you want a chance." Fatima stated.
Lacey put down her bag, and took her place in the group of dancers.
The music started to play, and Fatima gave direction. "Everybody watch." "Turn, Turn, Drop. Twist. 5,6,7, and Eight. Fatima went through the moves like it was her second nature. She owned the dance floor. "O.K., I want groups of five at a time." "Ms. Philly, You think you can lead this group?"
Lacey nodded, and took control like the professional she was.
The rehearsals continued for the rest of the afternoon. Lacey had worked hard that day, and felt confident that she had done her best.
"I had no idea that this was gonna be so tough" a girl sitting to her right had said.
Lacey took a well-deserved sip of her bottled water, and nodded to the girl.
"I've been to a lot of auditions in New York, and this is one of the toughest I've ever been too." She said.
"Well I've heard about auditions with Fatima." The girl said. "But I never expected this." The girl laughed. "My name is Melinda, by the way. "Melinda Sands". "But you can call me Mel."
Lacey extended her hand to her. "Lacey Chamberlain".
Fatima had finished all the groups and their auditions. "I am now going to call the names of the people I have chosen. "If you hear your name called, please take a place in line behind me." She began to call names. "Ashley Marks, Melinda Sands, and Lacey Chamberlain."
Lacey and Melinda looked at
each other with a congratulatory smile.
"Bobby?" "Bobby?" Lacey yelled. "Where are you?" She made her way around the apartment yelling his name. She ran upstairs to see if he was in his room. She went into her room, and passed by the window when she saw him out by the pool.
"Yea, I know." Bobby said to the person on the other line. "I would love to, but I'm in the middle of a project right now, and it's a little too hot in the city for me right now." Bobby replied. Out of the corner of his eye he could see lacey bounding towards him, skipping like a child. "I wanna thank you for calling, but I have to go." He said and put down his phone.
"Bobby!" Lacey shrieked, and bounded into his arms.
He looked at her somber. "You didn't get it?" he said as he looked at her trying not to burst into laughter.
"YESSSSSSSS" I did!" she yelled back at him.
"I'm so happy for you girl." He said.
She began telling him the events of the day. Across town at the Pavilion, Fatima was having a meeting with her Boys. "We picked the girls today for the shoot." She started telling the four gentlemen that were seated around the large conference table.
"So what do they look like?" AJ asked with a lift of his eyebrow. A chuckle came from the other guys at the table.
"Mr., We hired the dancers for your video, NOT for your pleasure." Fatima snapped at him.
"I know I was just messin' with ya." AJ replied.
"But if you must know, here are they're pictures." Fatima said as she laid the pictures of the dancers on the table. They got up from their chairs and took a look at the photographs.
AJ picked up one of the photographs. "Who's this?" he asked.
"Her name is Lacey Chamberlain" Fatima answered.
"Hmm" Aj replied.
"Rehearsals start tomorrow" Lacey said as she continued telling Bobby about her day. "I don't know when we get to meet the group."
Bobby watched as Lacey continued to tell her tale. It reminded Bobby of how she was when he met her. Full of life, and determination. She was destined for greatness, and he knew it.
"This is just the beginning" Bobby said to Lacey.
Kevin walked into the doors of the Starlight Pavilion, he was still carrying his luggage from the flight he was on all night. Sunglasses still affixed to his face, he walked down the hallway to the office, where the others would be waiting.
"Oh, look who finally decided to join us?" Brian, his cousin said, as he walked up to him and relieved him of one of his pieces of luggage. "You got here just in time, rehearsals are just starting." He said.
"I didn't miss anything while I was away?" Kevin asked, as he saw a group of girl's walk past the doorway.
Brian chuckled. "No, not that much." "C'mon " Brian said to his cousin. " They're waiting for us."
Kevin and Brian walked into the auditorium where they could see, and hear the other members of the group starting to learn the moves.
"No, not like that Nick" AJ said to Nick the youngest member of the group. "It's those big dogs of yours man." He continued.
"Yeah?" Nick replied. "You better watch it, or you'll find out what these big dogs can do."
"Damn, I go away for 2 days, and look what happens." Kevin said as he walked up to the stage.
"Yo, Kev" Howie shouted from the light board.
Kevin turned around, and smacked Howie's hand.
"Yea, they've been like this all morning." He replied. Reading the look Kevin had given him. "I just hope the dancers don't mind working with a bunch of goof's" Howie said.
Lacey had arrived and made her way to the auditorium where the rehearsals were going to be held. She opened the door, and made her way to the stage area where she saw Fatima.
AJ was the first to notice her, as she made her way down the aisle. "Watch her, she's dangerous." He said out loud. Lacey looked over, and flashed him a smile "Congratulations" he said to her, as she walked over to him.
"Well thank you" she said back to him.
On the stage Fatima was giving direction to Kevin, and Nick. Lacey walked up the steps, and put her belongings behind the stage. Fatima saw her, and told her to join in. Lacey was about to start moving, when she looked at who was dancing.
Kevin was counting out the rhythm to himself, and didn't notice that
Nick stopped. And ran into him. "What the hell" he began to say when he
looked up, and saw Lacey.
Kevin and Lacey stared at each other for a moment when Nick finally said, "Do you know each other?" Neither of them said a word. Fatima noticed their distraction, and called for a 5-minute break. Lost in Lacey's blue eyes, Kevin started to daydream...
"I can't believe you guys actually remembered me." Kevin said.
"Well you only called us about forty times from the flight." Nick responded. They walked down the corridor of Orlando International Airport. "How was your flight anyway?" Nick asked Kevin. Kevin didn't answer right away. "Dude, are you here?" Nick asked as he waved his hand in front of Kevin's eyes.
"Oh, Sorry, I was just thinking about something" Kevin said.
"O.K." Nick replied looking puzzled. Kevin was thinking about the girl he had met on the plane, and a smile crossed his face.
"Well actually someone" Kevin said to Nick.
"Oh, so that's what it is?" Nick said with a smirk. "Who is she?" Nick questioned Kevin.
"Just some girl who sat next to me on the flight." Kevin replied. "Her name was Lacey, she was nice." He said telling Nick "But I'll probably never see her again."
Lacey hadn't even thought of Kevin since she arrived in Orlando. She had been too busy to think of anything. But there he was standing in front of her. "H, Hi" was all she could muster. Kevin could tell that she was a little uneasy.
"So was this the audition you were talking about?" He asked her.
"Yes" she said to him. "But why are you here?" she inquired.
Kevin was puzzled by her question. "She doesn't really know," he thought to himself. "I'm in the band," he finally answered .She looked at him strangely.
"I had no idea" she laughed. He laughed back and noticed how beautiful her smile really was.
AJ and Nick had walked over to the cooler that was filled with cold drinks. "So what is that all about?' AJ asked Nick, referring to Kevin, and Lacey.
"I have no idea" Nick replied. "Kev never acts that way when he meets a girl." "What is her name anyway?"
"Um, I'm pretty sure her name is Lacey" AJ replied trying not to sound too involved. "Or something like that" he said as he took a sip of his water.
Nick looked at AJ. "I know who she is" he finally said. "He met her on his trip home from New York"
"I see" AJ said.
"O.K. People break is over" Fatima announced. "I want the girls over here"
She had been sizing the guys up while they were taking five. "Ashley, here
with Brian." Ashley was a sweet timid girl that Brain would be comfortable
with. Lacey had walked over to get a drink when she heard her name called.
"Lacey, over here please." Kevin had watched her cross the stage, and
secretly hoped that they would be paired. "Alexander?" Fatima called. Fatima
knew that she would have to keep AJ in check so she decided to pair him with
Lacey. He needed discipline, and he was the quickest learner, and best dancer
of her boys. Kevin shot AJ a look, and he knew exactly what Kevin meant.
"Melinda, can you please come stand here by Nick?" Fatima said. "We're only
going to go through half of the performance with this group today.
Take your positions, and follow me." Kevin looked on.
"Damn Girl, Aren't you tired?" Aj said to Lacey.
She just laughed at him. "Not at all." She replied "What, did I tire you out or something?"
AJ took the last drag of his cigarette, and chucked it out the door, and took and a sip of his water. "I don't think that I've ever worked that hard before." He said. They took a seat on the floor and waited for the others to finish. "So, have ya seen Orlando yet?" Aj asked Lacey.
"Actually, I haven't had the time to do anything." She replied. He was trying to make light conversation.
"Well I was thinking that maybe I could show you around if you would be interested."
She thought about it to herself. "Sure why not" She answered him.
"How about this afternoon?" Aj asked her.
"Well as far as I know Bobby doesn't have anything planned.
He looked at her puzzled. "Bobby?" He asked.
She laughed at his reaction. "He's my manager, my gay manager." She said.
Across the room Kevin was sitting with Nick. "So is this the Lacey from New York you were telling me about?" Nick asked.
"Yea, that's her." Kevin said.
"Well it looks like Aj, and her are getting along pretty well?" "Don't ya think?" Nick asked.
"Yea." Was all Kevin said. Nick knew what he was thinking.
"Maybe you should like go talk to her or something." Nick offered. He couldn't believe that he was pushing Kevin to talk to a girl.
"I will in a little while, she looks like she's busy right now." Kevin replied.
"O.K. that was good a good job today!" I'll see all of you tomorrow." Fatima said to all of the dancers.
Aj and Lacey had gotten up from where they were sitting. "I'll be back in a minute I have to talk to somebody." Aj said to Lacey. He smiled at her. "Don't go anywhere" he demanded. She laughed. Lacey was picking up her duffel bag when somebody else grabbed it from her.
"Here ya go," he said. She looked up and saw that it was Kevin. "I just wanted to tell you how great I thought you were up there." "The other guys told me you were good."
"Thank you," she said to him with her blue eyes sparkling. She had noticed that he was a bit nervous. He was fidgeting with his car keys.
"So have you seen Orlando Yet?" he asked her. I haven't yet, but...As she started to tell him, Aj walked up to them.
"Hey Kev, what's up." "I see you've met Lacey here."
"Yeah, we met before actually." He said as he looked at Lacey.
"So, are you ready to go?" Aj asked Lacey.
"Go?" Kevin asked.
"Yep," Lacey said. "I was trying to tell you that AJ here offered to show me around."
"Oh, did he" Kevin replied as he shot Aj a look.
Aj paid no mind to it. "Ya wanna come with us." He asked Kevin.
"No, that's O.K. Kevin replied. "Three's a crowd."
Some other time then?" Aj said to Kevin.
Nick was outside the auditorium playing some ball with Brian, when the stage door flew open, and Kevin came out, almost running into Nick. "Whoa man, where's the fire?" Nick asked.
"No fire, just AJ" he said. As he jumped into his truck, and pulled out of the lot.
"What was that supposed to mean?" Brian asked him.
"I have no idea." Nick replied.
"Check" Brian said as they
continued their game.
"Well I was thinking we could take a drive, and head on down towards the Disney area." AJ said to Lacey as they were making their plans for the afternoon.
"Disney?" Lacey replied.
AJ could see the excitement in her eyes as soon as he mentioned the word, "I guess Disney it is" he said to her laughing.
"I don't know, this girl is just not working." Fatima said to her partner.
"Lacey is really good." "Where can we find someone else like her?" Billy asked.
"Well she is from New York." Fatima said. "Maybe she would know somebody."
"Yes, maybe we should ask her." Billy said.
"I'll see if she is still here." Fatima said as she went to the door.
"Would you mind if we stopped by my place first? Lacey asked AJ. "I just wanna let Bobby know what is going on."
"No, Not at all " he said that would be cool. "Well Let's go" he said and grabbed her hand playfully.
"LACEY" Fatima yelled as she saw her walking down the hall. Lacey turned around and saw her.
"Yea" she said as she ran back to where Fatima was standing.
"Billy, and I wanted to talk to you about something." Fatima said. Lacey felt a pain in her stomach.
"S, sure, " Lacey replied.
"It's about your dancing" Fatima said.
Lacey could feel herself chest getting tight. What did she do?
"Actually, I was wondering if you knew anybody. Or could recommend anybody." Fatima began.
"It seems that one of the girls isn't working out the way we hoped she would." Billy added.
"It's not me is it?" Lacey sheepishly asked.
Billy and Fatima looked at each other, and laughed. "No, not at all" she said " "We are very pleased with you" "That's why we were asking you."
Lacey started to laugh. "I was really worried for a moment there" she said.
At that moment AJ poked his head in the office. "What?" "Havin' a party without me?" he asked.
"No, no parties AJ." Fatima scolded. "Just business"
"To tell you the truth," Lacey started. "I do know of somebody." "And she has a resume, longer than mine." " Her name is Kristine Florez"
"Hmm, sounds interesting." Billy said. "What can you tell us about her?"
"Better yet, I can show you" Lacey said. "I am heading home, and I can get my manger to arrange everything."
AJ looked on impressed with Lacey, and her dealings. "O.K., but in the meantime, why don't you get her resume faxed to us." Fatima said, and we can go from there.
"Kevin, what the hell is your problem?" he said out loud to himself. He was never this into a girl. Much less one that he hardly knew. And this whole thing with AJ made it weirder. As he was driving, his cell phone began to ring. "Where the hell is that thing" Kevin yelled as he was rummaging through the things he had on the seat next to him. "Hello." He said when he finally found the phone.
"Yo, Kev, its Nick." "I was just calling to find out what happened today?"
"Nothing, I was just in a mood I guess." Kevin replied.
"Mood?" Nick asked.
"Yes, I'm entitled just like everybody else aren't I?" Kevin replied sarcastically.
"Yea, I bet" Nick thought to himself. "Well I was calling to see if you wanted to hang with me and Bri tonight?"
"Yea, sure why not I need a bit of relaxation after this day." "Just give me some time, I need to get unpacked from my trip." Kevin said.
"OK, cool. We'll call when we decide where we are gonna go" Nick said and hung up.
"This is exactly what
I need" Kevin said to himself as he pulled in his driveway.
