Adventitious: Loss of hearing sensitivity occuring after birth and due to injury or disease.

Congenital: Loss of hearing sensitivity existing at or dating from birth.

Prelingual: Loss of hearing sensitivity occuring before the development of language skills; may be congential or adventitious.

Postlingual: Loss of hearing sensitivity occuring after the development of speech and hearing.
