The Voluntary Insane (by Me)
We have called ourselves the Wise
sometimes in fits of frustration, even the Damned
Often we play the part of the Mighty Dead
with our hearts as much in the next world as in this
Some of us carry the secrets of Death
in our ever slipping grasps
And carry such burdens as if they were
mere feathers
The Lady has charged us to hold that wisdom
and to train our minds and souls to learn
more when they can
The Lord has charged us to guard that knowledge
lest we someday forget
and to protect each other and ourselves
Many outside our quiet ways misunderstand
and call us warped in this way or that
I say that in some ways they are, perhaps,
closer to the truth than we know
Tredding the forgotten Ways as we need
Walking the Paths our ancestors foged before
but then sometimes hid from themselves
I welcome you to our ways and urge you
to know the price we all pay to some extent
We must believe that which we've learned
and been taught to see as untrue throughout our lives
Those of our Craft must see through what our cold
scientific society would call insane
If your heart be strong enough to tread this trail
and you mind can take the strain
I welcome you then to the ranks of the Voluntarily Insane!
(please note: the phrase "the ranks of the voluntarily insane" comes from the novel "Star Healer" by James White... I saw it and instantly saw another context in which the line could be used. This man's works are excellent, incidentally)
