WHY TOMS CUSTOM FITTING ?

The following information is to give you a basic idea about some of my custom fitting procedures and why "What flex and glove size do you wear?" is not custom fitting a golfer for golf clubs.

Custom Fitting

Do you honestly believe when you are asked by some one what flex and size glove you wear are truly offering custom fit golf clubs?

"Custom Fit Golf Clubs" are all about information...the better the information, the better chance you have of truly custom fitting any particular golfer. Golfers are as individual as snow flakes and to say one club, or set of off the rack clubs fits every golfer defies common sense. I put many hours into my "Club Fitting Form" and all for one reason, to obtain enough information to correctly construct golf clubs that really are custom fit to an individual golfer. This information allows me to incorporate many things into a golfers clubs that will help with his or her particular physical, athletic and ball striking abilities or faults.

Each golfers, physical, athletic and ball striking abilities are different. Correct interpretation of club fitting data only comes about from schooling, certification and staying abreast of all the changes occurring in the golfing industry. The certificates on my wall were earned and not only assure that I know how , but that I also know why and how much to apply changes to a golf club to guarantee a proper fit for an individual golfer.

I know lots of places offer some of the same clubs as I do at cheaper prices. I could match or beat their prices, but a slapped together, give me your money set of golf clubs will never come from Tommy Knocker Golf.

Frequency Matching

I frequency match every raw steel and graphite shaft, both irons and woods, that are installed in my Custom Fit golf clubs.

This is accomplished by the use of an electronic device called a "Frequency Analyzer" that reads the oscillations of the shaft, in CPMs (cycles per minute) thus allowing for "precise" determination of that raw (uncut) shafts base frequency. Small cuts to the butt or tip of each shaft allows me to adjust the frequency of each shaft, so to that they all have the same exact base frequency. I frequency match all of my raw golf shafts in house. Now when I frequency flex each shaft for an individual golfer, I am sure the finished flexes will be "EXACT".

What this means to you, the golfer, is that all the clubs with in a set will have the correct flex for you and the feel between clubs within the set are the same. One does not feel any better or worse than any other club within the set.

Frequency Flexing

The shaft flex is the heart of the golf club and requires the greatest attention to assure that it is correct for your swing.

The shaft flex letters on golf shafts ie. A,L,R,S,X have little meaning because there is no standard of measuring flex with in the golf shaft industry. Each manufacturer has their on particular method to measure the flex of golf shafts. Results from independent tests done on 1000's of shafts by Golfsmith not only showed that one companies "R" flex equaled another companies "S" flex and so on, there were even overlapping flex's with in individual companies.

Golfsmiths R & D (Research and Development) staff used frequency, weight, torque & Field testing to test and then rate all these golf shafts by miles per hour so there is now a truly accurate method of determining the true rating of golf shafts for club-makers like myself. These shafts are re-evaluated every year, thus guaranteeing an up to date representation for speed & tempo of every shaft. This assures that you are getting the correct flex for your swing and tempo.

Since the frequency can be extrapolated into miles per hour, I can, using my frequency analyzer, adjust the frequency exactly to match an individual golfers swing speed & tempo and maintain this flex for each shaft through out the set. This guarantees an exact flex match and not a that's close enough or you pick it flex for a golfer.

Spine Alignment

Every golf shaft whether it is graphite or steel is not perfectly round, straight, or stiff throughout its length and this irregularity produce a line running the length from the butt end to the tip that is stiffer than the rest of its circumference. This line is called the spine and is a result of the manufacturing process. Steel shaft start out as a flat piece if steel that is rolled into a circle and is welded as the two edges touch. Graphite shafts are made by rolling a sheet of graphite cloth soaked in resin until it is the thickness and size required by the manufacturer, usually leaving a spine were the cloth ends.

Couple correct spine alignment with the frequency matching and frequency flexing, the end result is a set of golf clubs with a consistent feel between every club that is unbelievable.

Weight Sorting

Another tool to assure a consistent feel between each club with in a set, is to weight sort the shafts. When I receives a group of shafts, the first thing I do is weigh each shaft and sort them into like weights. Now when I start a set of clubs, the weight and base frequency match for each shaft, assuring with out a doubt the end product will be set of clubs with a consistent feel and playability between clubs that is unbelievable.

Sensicore

Sensicore is a product that shaft manufacturers and I put down inside steel shafts to deaden vibration upon miss hits. This an option I offer at no additional cost for every club I assemble. If you have every miss hit a steel shafted iron on a cold day that does not contain " Sensicore", you know how it feels..YOW..sting, hurt. That stinging vibration is what the Sensicore dampens. There are many designs and they all do a good job of lessening the sting, mine included. Graphite shafts as a rule do not require Sensicore. Their construction has the natural ability to dampen the vibration of a miss hit.
