Florida St. is #1 in the ESPN/USA Today Poll this week.
Florida State University and the University of Louisville announced last Monday that they have signed a contract for a two-game football series beginning next season according to FSU Director of Athletics Dave Hart.
The Cardinals will visit Tallahassee on September 23 next season with the Seminoles scheduled to travel to Louisville to play at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium during the 2002 football season. Next season's date with U of L fills the game canceled with Auburn.
Florida State opens the 1999 football season ranked No. 1 in both major polls (USA TODAY/ESPN and the Associated Press) while Louisville starts the year among those receiving votes in both polls.
"We are pleased to attract an opponent of the caliber of Louisville to our schedule both next year and in 2002," said Hart. "Our commitment to fill the schedule with a Division I opponent was a challenge given the short time available. Florida State has a rich history of competition with Louisville dating back to 1952 and, of course, we were both members of the Metro Conference."
FSU and Louisville have met 12 times on the gridiron with the Seminoles holding an 11-1 advantage. Louisville's only win came in that first game in 1952. Florida State won at Louisville 40-15 the last time the two teams met in 1991.
"I'm glad that we have been able to schedule Louisville for next season and in the future," said FSU head coach Bobby Bowden. "We have a history of playing Louisville and I think they will be a great addition to our schedule."
Florida State will play Miami, Florida and Louisville next season in addition to the regular schedule of eight ACC opponents.
